Corbin RT seat intitial impression

Hello,

I know that seats are like oil... But I wanted to give a quick report after riding my new Corbin seat for about 500 miles over the last week.

First, people say Corbin seats are heavy. I weighed mine at 7.19 lbs. For reference, the Russel Day Long that came off weighs 5.52 lbs. Heavier, sure! But I didn't weigh the engine bars, or highway pegs, or Clearwater lights. And please, don't weigh the rider! I'm not sure that 1.67 lbs means much on a sport-tourer, but that is up to you to decide.

I did the ride-in service. I showed up at the Hollister factory at 0900 and left at about 1:30 PM with my new seat. In the end, I didn't gain much by doing the ride-in, since I was very pleased with the initial test ride, and they didn't do any additional customizing of the foam. I did get to pick my cover, and there are many options.

I have to say that the seat isn't nearly as firm as I'd expected, and was quite comfortable from the beginning. The seat is very supportive, and the fibertech seat pan is noticeably stiffer than the factory pan. I could feel the old seat pan flex over bumps, and this one doesn't! I like the firmness and support this seat provides.

The Corbin definitely feels different than the RDL, but I am quite pleased with it, and will likely sell the Day Long. More to follow after it gets broken in over the next month or two. Mr. Corbin said that it would take about 2-3,000 miles to break in completely. Guess I have to go ride! :)

I don't mean to add any fuel to the 'what oil, er... tire, errrr, seat is best' threads, but I wanted to share my experiences. Seats are expensive! And I've spent a pile of money on different ones. I hope you don 't have to.

What was wrong with the RDL that made you replace it? Asking because I have one that I love.

I can't speak to the RDL, but I have about 70k on my Corbin, 48 states, 4 provinces and can do 700 mile days. If you asked what the characteristics that make it an all day ride, I would say, strong and wide seat pan, and foam that doesn't collapse over the day. This is a totally subjective opinion based on a sample size of one.

Nothing was wrong with my RDL, really. I'm having problems with hip pain, and it didn't happen in other chairs. Just when riding, and sleeping on the ground camping. I fear that the miles are moving up to the hip now... To be fair to RDL, I bought the seat second hand, I've gained a ton of weight, and I'm not sure it has the special spring for heavyweights. It does 'cup' my hip more, and I think this contributes to my hip pain.

I'd have gladly gone up to the RDL shop to get the seat re-done, but I live an hour away from Hollister, and the Corbin was cheaper before including vacation and hotel. I was kind of hesitant, having heard poor reports on Corbin's customer service. I knew that if this didn't work out, I'd be able to ride to Redding and get RDL to make (the fatter me) a seat. I believe that RDL has some of the best customer service out there, I just had a closer option that I ended up being very pleased with. I can't say anything bad about RDL. I can say bad things about my hip...

My apologies if I sounded anti Russel.

Thank you for your thoughts. I am circling around this issue, too. I bought the Alaskan Leather shearling cover to dip my toe in this....and because I'm a cheap a$$. I looked at a new seat and am intrigued by the new Touratech, however, :eek $$$$!

corbin seat

Bought my RT 'low' last January. Needed more legroom and ability to not be locked into one position and converted to regular height Corbin. This seat is not as hard as most corbins I have owned in the past. My alaskan sheepskin is not needed from day 1 and I have the option of riding 100's of miles a day and not even notice the seat. That's a compliment from me. My corbin was off the shelf with just the cover I selected. I have no experience with Russell.

I have one as well. No problems at all from what I can tell.

I bought one of those slightly used off of another forum and hated it. For me, it was very uncomfortable and sold it off pronto.

Funny. I went the opposite direction. I bought a Corbin seat for my R last spring and rode it from NC to the MT rally and back via a scenic route, 6200 miles. The seat never broke in and I finally found an Airhawk at the Rapid City HD dealer just to get home. It was the most unbearable seat I've ever owned, and oddly enough, not my first Corbin. I'm now waiting for my RDL to be finished and shipped. I can only hope.
