Wunderlich engine bars on 2014 R1200RT

Installed chrome Wunderlich engine protection bars today on my 2014 R1200RT. It was a lot easier that installing similar Wunderlich bars on my 2007 R1200RT.

They look really nice. A couple of questions:

1. How much harder is it to get the covers off for checking valve clearances?
2. Would they offer any protection to the panniers and fairing in a tipover, or just the heads?

I want to say mine would never take a nap but if so it'd be my first bike ever that didn't.

Yes, I did. It was a lot easier that installing Wunderlich bars on my '07 RT.

Looks great Dean. I'm getting the same bike and color in a few weeks. So I'm interested if these guards might protect the plastic in a slow drop?

FYI -- I no longer use Wunderlich bars, as I did four years ago. I now use Ilium's.

I saw BMWDEAN's RT on another forum. I liked his set up so much that I made mine quite similar. The ilium website has a very convincing video. Link to ilium website -

Here is the video that convinced me to use Illium crash bars. (Also, the Illium rear crash bars do not interfere with the passenger's legs). My initial info came from BMWDEAN's posting on the BMW Luxury Touring website.

I believe Ilium produces a superior product.

Are the crash bars difficult to put on?
