GPS mount alternatives?

Hi All,

I am interested in mounting a gps to my 2008 R1200RT and not sure what the best mounting options may be. I just purchased the bike last month and its my first BMW so I am pretty clueless on where to start or what the best options are. I see some mounting options on line, but not too many with pictures that show them on the motorcycle.

Anyone have any recommendations with pictures they would like to share? I do like the BMW option, but I'm not too anxious to spend $1k on a gps...

I would suggest finding a GPS with the features that you like, and then look for the mount. A GPS that is made for a motorcycle (waterproof, shock resistant) will be more expensive.

Here is my solution. A Migsel mount $180. Garmin 2555LMT GPS $117. RAM Aqua Box and arm $75. Powerlet Battery Harness $55. TOTAL: $427

Not cheap but once you upgrade to a dedicated Motorcycle GPS you could sell off the GPS, AquaBox and get a few bucks back.

Good starting point. I think the n?vi? 2597LMT comes with Bluetooth.

RAM mount on its own replacement cover for the clutch fluid.

Then a Garmin Zumo mounted to that, hard-wired into your bike.

Done.

Ram ball mount on top of clutch fluid reservoir, ram mount arm to GPS. Garmin 660, with an aftermarket hood. Been running this set-up for 10,000+ without problems. Lots of options out there, look at where you want to have the GPS mounted and find the equipment to mount it there. The 660 has been through a couple bad rain storms, and still works fine.

One of nicest/cleanest mounts I've seen is the Multi-pod from Wunderlich America. I don't have one, but looks like a cleaner set-up than my Ram mount.

I will second the Wunderlich mount.
I use a Garmin Zumo 665 in a Touratech locking bracket.
I had the Migsel mount on my R1150RT and loved it. Tried one on my R1200RT and did not like it. It was too bouncy.
Sold it and ordered the Wunderlich and have never looked back.

As an aside, I tried the clutch reservoir mount on my 1150RT, but found I preferred the gps in my line of sight, I didn't have to take my eyes off the road directly in front of me.

I think RAM mounts are the best. Sturdy as heck without breaking the bank. Lots of RT owners run GPSes, so there must be a common way to do it. When I run an image search, I get lots of results that should help you: https://images.search.yahoo.com/sea...p=2008+R1200RT+gps+mount&fr=moz35&fr2=piv-web

Here is the RAM site: http://www.rammount.com/Products/MotorcycleMounts/tabid/128/Default.aspx#/

Another good option is to speak with the nice folks at GPSCity. I have found them to be very helpful: http://www.gpscity.com/mounts

I also note that there is a club member (who I do not know personally) who is selling a Zumo 350LM in the flea market for a pretty good price. Those come with mounts.

Here's what I am ending up with...

First, thanks for the replies! I appreciate the all feedback and advice, it helped me to determine which route to go.

I ended up with a Garmin Montana 650 that I found on Ebay in near perfect condition for a good price that came with the car mount and NA nav maps. It's definitely an upgrade from my Garmin Oregon 450T, which I found to not be really that great on the bike because it's just a bit too small and not really set up with the same level of street nav capabilities.

I will be mounting it to the clutch reservoir with a RAM mount. I will probably end up with the migsel or Wunderlich mount if I end up using the GPS a lot.
