The FIM Supermoto World Championship is set to be reduced from two classes to one for the 2010 season after cost-cutting measures were agreed to secure the future of the series.
A meeting, which was attended by the FIM, Youthstream and team representatives, agreed in principle for the S1 class to remain but it is not yet clear whether the series will be for open class machines or 450cc bikes.
There was also agreement to reduce tyre costs in a bid to make the series more financially viable for teams and riders.
Giuseppe Luongo, President of rights holders Youthstream, said: "The goal of all parties is to continue developing the FIM SuperMoto World Championship, I am delighted with the atmosphere, with the understanding of all to continue with the professional promotion and to find a balance between the show and the costs.
"Of course it is not possible to cut the investment in television, in timing and especially in the safety, but it is important to find other compromises where we can reduce the costs for the teams, and everyone agrees that one of the main points is the tyres."
Dr. Wolfgang Srb, the FIM/CMS President, added: "That is exactly how a project has to be developed nowadays: all the relevant partners discuss about the important issues in an open and friendly atmosphere and work jointly on a solution.
"The reduction to one class was already on the agenda since last year and the issue of the tyres had also high priority.
"I trust that the best solution for the capacity of the S1 class as of 2010 will be identified shortly in order to give manufacturers, teams and riders the chance to prepare without stress for the next year. A much harder tyre compound will not only reduce the costs significantly, but will also bring back spectacular slides and drifts that have been so significant for SuperMoto."
