Aloha from Washington State

Lived on the island of Oahu for almost 30 years and always had a motorcycle. Always dreamed of riding around the continental U.S. and I started putting together the gear I would need to fulfill that dream in 2018 when I got my Aerostitch Roadcrafter suit in bright yellow. That was followed by the purchase of a 2015 R1200R in 2019.

In March 2022 I shipped the R1200 to San Diego. I already rode to Death Valley and camped for 2 nights. I then rode up to WA State, to wait for warmer weather. I plan to ride back south at the beginning of May and hope to camp at Yosemite. I go back to Oahu for a couple of months and will resume riding in August, heading East to Texas and eventually to the east coast. Then back to WA in the fall.

New to riding long distances and I have a lot to learn. Having a great time so far and I’m looking forward to fulfilling my dream.

Welcome from the intermountain west. Hopefully you’re not planning to travel east from San Diego to Texas in August. If so it will be memorable.

Welcome and Aloha from TN,

I grew up on Ohau, where I used to ride enduro up at Kahuku and trails in Mililani before there was any housing there. Now I live in Chattanooga and hope to ride the TAT this year or next.

Hope to see you out there on the road one day.

Be well, ride safely.

Robert

My thoughts also. I’ve traveled part of that route in mid May, from Marana, AZ, to San Diego, when the temp was already over 100F most of the way. Can’t imagine August.

You might consider taking a route north first and then traveling east, something like north through CA and OR and then turn east. Crossing the plains anywhere in August may be warm but you might do better traveling through the mountains heading east (ID, CO, WY, MT).

Welcome Mr Ron from the 50th State.

Don’t go thru Texas in the middle of summer unless you’ve got appointments that can’t be rescheduled. TX is at the other end of the Riding Spectrum when compared to cruising in Hawaii... You’ll be Broasted & Baked in that AeroStich - Jus Sayin! Can U say, “Heatstroke?”
Just go clockwise from Washington, and maybe get a Camelback to fill with ice and put inside your jacket...

Being retired Air Force, U can’t go wrong with a Whole Day at the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH!

Suggest U consider a stop at The Glenn Curtis Museum in New York:
https://glennhcurtissmuseum.org/about/

Something else to ponder that they didn’t have in Hawaii - a Steam Railroad museum:
https://www.nps.gov/stea/index.htm

And if U get this far south, two very interesting & worthwhile museums in Alabama:
Barbers’ Vintage Motorsports Museum & racetrack - see if there’s any racing scheduled...
https://www.barbermuseum.org

Smithsonian Space & Rocket Center -- Biggest one this side of Alpha Centari...

Be safe and be seen on your explorations - the drivers don’t care about your long-awaited roadtrip! They’re D-I-S-T-R-A-C-T-E-D!

Happy Trails whenever U can - Ciao!

Maunawili boy here

I grew up on Oahu too! It's kinda mind blowing to live in the Islands then come here and... just go and go and go. New England is A-mazing. I use the Rever app to find good roads and string together nice rides. But for a Hawaii-boy, just go south a bit and pick up the remnants of Rt 66. There still some car and bike culture going on down there, and go through Arizona and New Mexico the the Continental Divide -- there nothing like it. The desert is a mind blower for us Islanders.

Thank you both, will look into a different route.

I’m still adjusting to how vast everything is. I already made the mistake of veering off my planned route thinking it’s just a short detour then ending up doubling the time it takes to get to my destination. However, I am loving all the space after being so limited by living in Oahu.

Thank you for the suggestions.

If you’re still traveling in CA, over Memorial Day weekend, you might consider coming to the 49’er Rally at Quincy, CA, (northern CA), sponsored by the BMW Club of Northern CA. It’s a good rally with plenty of opportunity to visit with other riders with knowledge and experience traveling continental US. Safe travels and see you on the road.

Unfortunately, I will be back in Oahu during Memorial day to catch the summer swells. I will be back in Sacto area in August & will be heading towards Waco, TX.

Welcome Ronald! Hope you fulfill all your riding dreams. A pic or two of the bike is always appreciated.
