What did you do to your bike before the trip?

I have been spending time changing fluids, turning bolts & screws, washing, waxing....:thumb

What have you done to your bike to prepare for this trip?:lurk

Well, got new meats a couple K ago.
I have checked tire pressure, oil level.
And it's (R12RT) all nice and shiny clean and ready for launch in the freakin' rain tomorrow.
:banghead

All part of the fun.
Be safe on the road.

Rain...

I saw that! Now I have to decide what to pack! My wife has left me one saddle bag and I have use that side for tools, oil, and a emergency/first aid kit. I think that leaves room for a pair of boxer shorts, and my tooth brush! I think its time for a trailer, or a bike for my wife!

In fact If I gave my bike to her....I could get another new bike...:whistle........!

Perhaps I will win one of the two bikes at the rally?

However, this year I will be the unshaved guy in a dirty tee-shirt, shorts, and boots with clean teeth. My wife will be the pretty one in clean coordinated outfits...

Just bought this 04 R1150RSL three weeks ago:

Tires
Replaces Pivot Bearings
Installed Amplirider headset stereo amplifier and Garmin 2730/XM/MP3
Installed Whistler Crusader radar detector
Installed Moto Office rear box
Oil
Brake flush
tran/FD fluid change

I'm at the Rally now...........looking good!

when mounting new tires last month, found that the final drive splines on my wifes bike had gone to crap since the last rear tire, found a used final with a close-enough ratio and good splines to use while the ring gear on the other goes out for rebuild... oh yeah all fluids, valves and everything else...

BMW Chrome

I hardwired my new ( remanufactured ) Garmin Streetpilot 2820 to my 1981 R100RT. This replaces the GarminV. Color! No downloads! Ya Hoo !:dance

lets see:

all fluids
carb rebuild
push rod tube replacement
valves/carb balance
new tires
transmission input shaft seal replacement
refresh the throw out bearing in the clutch actuator
emergency late night day before leaving welding repairs to the right bag mount

and very last minute on the last three, we'd already packed up a truck in anticipation of the bike being in pieces come go time. but everyone came through, max bmw, my welding connection and myself.

so i just threw the bike in the truck and took off.:thumb

and now i'm sitting in a hotel, enjoying a Yuengling in a hotel about 200 miles northeast of the rally after a great day of touring homes of former presidents in Virginia.

I'm presently at the rally site. Today I experienced the failure of the alternator belt on my 1150GS. Fortunately I had a spare, and within 20 minutes I was back on the road.Takes up little room, but worth its weight in gold.

Well, truth be known, I do have another belt along with extra spark plugs, tools, DVM, and twin-max. Mostly all the tools are to help others. That was the first time I've ever needed to do for me.

my prep

I got new tires and a oil change. Loaded up the ipod. Built a new dashboard on my '96 R1100RT to hold my V1 and GPS. Got a beeded seat cover (yes, it does work!). Also bought a Cardo Q2 headset. Now I can hear my wife so 'oh god' on every curve! Finally, I washed the bike, cleaned windshield and check the air pressure. Great ride and great rally.

Weekend before rally, rebuilt the forks to take care of some leaking seals. Replaced the steering bearings at the same time. The morning of the ride, checked my tire pressure and left the dang valve stem cap on the driveway and proceeded on my merry way for a 500 mile round trip. Cap laying right there when I got home. Did not wash the windshield.

Tuesday, (the day I left for the rally):
  • New front tire
One week before rally:
  • Upgrated front and rear suspension bits installed
  • New brake line fabricated and installed
  • Flushed and bled brakes

Two weeks before rally:
  • Oil change
  • Coolant change
  • New radiator hoses installed

One month before rally:
  • New rear tire

I think that mostly covers it.

As for pending work:
  • Fix horn (mysteriously stopped working after suspension swap?)
  • Fab up a switch plate to hold replacement ABS and grip heater switches
  • Fab up a new bracket for fog light

I had to drop each bowl once and dump out a little trash.... she ran like a champ and didnt miss a lick....did between 2500 and 3000 miles (odometer didnt work when i got it and i've had the little bike 17 years!!!
