I started adding automation to our last house in about 2017 or so. We started with being able to turn lights out with an Alexa or Siri. But I've added scenes, August door locks, our Sonos system, the Roku in the garage, etc.

In our old house, my wife used to commute on the bus, so I set it up to recognize her when she got close to the house. It would unlock the front door for her and turn the lights on. She loved it.

These days, I've added the bedroom ceiling fan and a good portion of the lighting to our network. It's nice to be in bed and say Good Night, turning all the lights off and locking both front and back doors.

Everything still works without internet, but it's been super helpful to have the automations, especially when one of us has had mobility issues like a broken ankle or foot surgery.

I love when stuff works, until it doesn't. Where we live in Texas everything better be simple because repair and/or service personnel are few and far away. Any service would be at least 50 miles away and more likely 125 or 250 miles away.

Purely as a side note, has anybody had experience with a person who actually can repair a massage chair??

Nice that you seem to be able to seem keep all that rolling.
Did you get going on that “Tesla Wall” you spoke of in the past to power it all when the street power is out?

We have a generator, so the wall is kinda low need right now. We'll see how long we stay here. I'm retiring next Friday and my wife a couple years after that, so we'll probably buy something smaller in a couple/three years.

It's honestly not hard to keep all that stuff up and running. I use mostly Hue bulbs and light strips, along with a stack of smart plug controllers. Sonos had its issues when they updated their app a couple years ago, but honestly, it doesn't take much, if anything to keep things rolling steadily.

If the power is out, the generator starts up and switches over automatically. It's a 16kw generator, so it'll run the whole house as long as there's natural gas. If the network is down, no worries. The Hue bulbs work like regular bulbs, the outlets still work as outlets and if the network is down, the whole house still functions just fine.

Most of the home automation stuff doesn't affect the base functionality of anything. Even the automated Lutron switches I use still work like a regular dimmer when the network is down.

I would just buy new glasses
I'll go back to my corner now :)
She liked not having to dig in her purse in the dark or rain for her keys. She'd get within a couple feet of the door and unlock and turn the lights on. I tried to have it turn the porch light on to greet her as she came up the driveway, but it wouldn't see her far enough from the network to make that helpful.

With all those devices in your house that listen for you to say something be careful what you or someone might say, even in hyperbole or silliness. They record everything and that information has been accepted as evidence in court. Your home is no longer your castle! (Black helicopters can leave now :ROFLMAO:  )

Like- “I’m going to Nevada to buy a two-stroke, gas powered string line trimmer”? 🤣😂

This is not necessarily true. If you use the appropriate security settings, everything you do is anonymized, breaking any linkage that can identify you specifically. Not even your IP address is recorded. But the text it recorded is used for dev, but not associated with you in any way.

Additionally, it does not "record everything", but listens for its activation signal, usually a low frequency word or word pair like Siri, Alexa or Hey Google. At that point, it listens for a request, usually in the form of [desired action][device] and then acts. As soon is it is finished processing your command and executes the action, it stops listening and reverts to "idle" where it is only listening for its activation signal.

When you set these devices up, you can select both anonymizing your data, which you should always do as well as control it's "follow up" or "verbose" mode, which allows you to follow up with an additional request or a thank you. If you disable that mode, it only starts listening when you use the activation word and stops listening when it has a full command.

I hope that's helpful. I've heard people talking about how they were discussing something in the house and then got ads somewhere, but even after nearly 8 years with these devices, I've never experienced that type of thing.

While that is all true Dave I believe the average user doesn't understand nor care to research in order to understand the myriad of choices for security/privacy settings in each device necessary to accomplish that. The default settings usually err on the side of the vendor instead of on the side of the consumer when it comes to privacy unfortunately.

When will a rally site map be available either on the app or the rally section of this site? It keeps saying it's coming. . .but when? Thanks

Maps are currently available on rally webpage and within rally app.
Rally Grounds Site Map

Can I possibly have a role in future Rally Map development? I can't find where the beer is on this year's product!
Seriously though, among other important things... where's the Beer Tent?

They are trying to mess up my perfect trip planning. I looked at the site map from last time, carefully calculated the GPS coordinates for the main gate, and put that location in my GPS. Now they have changed the main gate location from the north side to the west side so I have to do it all over again.

So the new coordinates are: N36.19908, W86.27558

Once they announce next years Rally Chairs (I haven't seen anything yet but may have missed it), I'd reach out to them and let them know you're interested in helping.

Based on schedule on Rally App, it'll be in the Hale Moss Bldg which is right next to Entertainment Pavillion.
