2023 Richmond VA: The 50th National MOA Rally

Part of the problem could be how "sign up genius" works with older android phones.

I just tried signing up+ after clicking the icon, " "sign up genius" showed... But the volunteer charts never did.
I blame it on my older phone. Please chime in...

You should call the office for help. I’d be surprised if you are the only one with that issue. The friendly staff at the MOA Office will be willing to help you. :)

Where do we sign up to volunteer?

My android showed all spots are filled already.

Did you click at the top of the page to select the different options like 50/50, and Bike wash?
When I open the main page I see a note that all positions are full but when I check the different positions I see plenty of open slots.

One timing issue I seem to have every rally is the way special events are announced piecemeal. I signed up for volunteer duty Thursday morning, then the Beerfest was announced for Friday afternoon so I signed up for that, now we have the DC tour opportunity which I’d really like to join but conflicts with meeting old friends at the Beerfest. And somewhere along the line the ON contributors’ get together will be announced, probably in conflict with other events.

A bit more coordination between those special events sure would be nice!

Pete

... Your not the only one with this issue Pete.
As a priority choice develops, cancelation of some intended volunteer duty is sometimes necessary for us all.
There's other folks waiting on the opportunity to fill-in.

BMW Motorcycles... A Century of Innovation

... Worthy of note, especially for some travelers far away and coming to/from Virginia.
About 400 miles southwest of the National Rally, in Greer SC, is The Ultimate Driving Museum of the BMWCCA.

A new exhibit, Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of BMW Motorrad... will be opening in late May.

Approximately 45 motorcycles, plus 5 BMW motorcycle powered vehicles from 1923 to the present era,
will be on display until January 2024.

More information on their website: theultimatedrivingmuseum.org

Important to note, this is not the nearby BMW Zentrum Museum.
However, that would make a fine "combo pack" to consider for a visit!

WOW ... that's a nice day ride for us in Charlotte area!

Thanks for posting that John. I’m going to try to get up there in May for the opening.

I’ve enjoyed every rally I’ve attended since Johnson City, but this one is shaping up to be stellar! I really appreciate the early communication of events, things to see both on-site and off, interesting routes, and information about roads leading to the event. Having that knowledge so far in advance has truly helped me shape my route to maximize enjoyment for me and Glenlivet!

We’ll arrive Wednesday for volunteer duty looking forward to seeing old friends and making new.

Entertainment schedule at the VA 50th just released...

... AND that alone, is exceptional!

The joint will be kick'n four consecutive nights.

Check out the Rally Page, then under All About The Rally, Entertainment, for the line-up... yeah, stellar!

Sometimes I’m just overwhelmed by the magnitude of the kindness of our members. Pete and John, if I could see your souls they would glimmer as gold. Fun fact, the April page of the MOA calandra which hangs in my office at work in the upper right hand corner has Pete and Glenny in the side car on the dragon, all I can think is, I know that rockstar and his dog! We’re going to have a good time in Virginia folks, if you can make this one, do so.

Ug. I'm having a hard time getting excited for the rally. It's 70 miles from home. I could leave after work and still get there in time to set up camp. I was planning to stay until Sunday morning. At the last two rallies, I would plan day rides to whatever the heck I haven't been to before. I've been to most of Virginia. I can make up some day rides, but they won't be "epic" like last year. Seems a little too far to go to the mountains/BRP on the way there or back or during the day. I've got some volunteer time planned but that's in the evening.

What are you all doing/going to see? Help me get excited and put something on my to-do list.

I feel your pain, while living in Maryland I saw most of Virginia, Maryland and Eastern PA. I've got one day trip so far, pay my respects to the Marine Corps most decorated soldier. Figure something else out from there I guess.

I would also love to pay my respects to Chesty Puller.

Riding East to Richmond from Charlotte does not excite me either since it seems like I would be riding AWAY from the good roads. BUT ... what has me very excited is I am meeting 2 Canadian buddies near Buffalo NY, riding to Rochester to pick up another buddy and then we are heading through NY state, VT. NH and ME. Then will head south and show my Canadian buddies some of the great roads in WV and VA ending in Richmond. We have a great route mapped and some cool overnight stops. Do the short and not exciting ride to Richmond became a very nice east coast and New England tour.

This reminds me of my ride from Atlanta to Morganton, NC in 1996. I went by way of Nova Scotia…

This rally was, btw, the final nail in our decision to retire in WNC. In 1996 I was invited to be the Maps & Hospitality Chair, and my job was to ride herd on volunteers from three local clubs and to create a local ride sheet. This was just as the Internet was being invented, but we didn’t have a web site then, so the ride sheet was posted on IBMWR and also printed out on paper. Nobody used GPS to any great degree then.

I'm doing the MABDR the week prior and then in July doing a trip from VA through NE, ending in ME. So, I'll get the riding time in, just not related to the Rally. I had a ball in TN and MO going all over the place to stuff I'd never seen before. Even had this been in Roanoke, I'd have seen parts of the state I had not before. Ah, oh well. It's gotta be like this for others wherever it's held.
