Nav VI gone again!

For some reason unbeknownst to me, whenever I try to attach the link, my account info is attached and, as much as I like you guys, I don't think I want to buy a sunshade for everyone who clicks on it. :laugh

Still coming up as $13.00, though.

Since we're looking from another IP address when we click on your link it should ask us to sign in.
To try it out pick something more expensive and I'll let you know how it works :)

Are you copying the link from your past Orders page?

Do a new "Nav V GPS sunshade" search, which will find several at/near the $13 price. Right click the correct item on the search page and copy the link, paste that link into a reply here. That should omit any account info.

Whenever I go to Amazon, my browser automatically signs me in. Perhaps I should try signing out when I close the app? No wonder my wife sometimes loses her patience with me. :)

No, no…leave it signed in and be sure to lose your phone or tablet somewhere where I can find it. I love a bargain! :D

Best,

:D

I've know that about you for years DeVern....

Sure, nooooowwwwww the cryptologist chimes in to complete the derailing of this thread! :lol

Getting back on track, those looking at the Amazon offerings would do well to carefully suss out the mounting methods. I, too, bought my sunshade on Amazon but it was a near duplicate of the spendy Wunderlich offering, maybe even from the same manufacturer. I wanted a shield that didn’t interfere with the Nav Prep and that traveled with the gps—snap out of one Nav Prep and into another without having to fiddle with remounting the shield. I’m not sure the current Amazon offerings do that. Anyway, something to look at.

Amazons nav 6 shade is the snap on just like my shade for the 4 and 5 navs I have now. I just didn't realize the sunshade fit the 4,5 and 6 navs. Now that that's been established, I ordered the one from amazon sent in the link by another.

Those are the only ones my brother and I are going to use.

When I bought a new 2016 RT they threw in a Nav 5. I never unboxed it. Sold it and used a smartphone. I just bought a 2017 GSA with a Nav 6. Fooled around with it for a bit. It's laggy and slow and the map screen is cluttered.

Ended up using my iPhone moto app to plan a route in about a minute and rode with that.

I'm still kind of confused why anyone is trying to get the Nav unit to work at all.

My Nav 4 directed me all the way from the southern border of the US, through BC, Yukon, Ak. to the arctic circle and back without one misstep on directions. 8K miles, much of it with no cell service through BC and Yukon territory.

I use it simply for directions on both motors, don't connect it to the wonder wheel in the RS, don't play music through it etc. It has one purpose, get me from where I am to where I'm going. Both the Nav 4 and now the 5 have done exemplary jobs of affording me navigation on the fly as they were designed to do.

My brother uses his phone [ though he has the garmin 5 up and running ] because he'll lose cell service for long stretches on trips. On a Xmas trip this year to Puerto Penasco, Mexico, my garmins [ I brought both ] could find the town but not the condo's. His phone got us there. Very unusual however that our garmins can't put us at the correct address, but it was Mexico.

On my third one here as well. To their credit, Garmin has replaced each one with no hassle. But I DO keep my Nav V in the trunk on long trips.

Replaced Nav VI again. Only lasted 3 montths, but they replaced . . . .

Replaced the Nav VI again. Only lasted 3 months this time, but they replaced it again no questions asked. Its great when it works and the Wunderwheel is worth the hassle for me. It is surprising that they haven't fixed the screen issue after all these years. I will have had mine 5 years in June, when the warranty is nominally up. I'll see what happens in the next few months. Thanks everyone for their comments so I can know my options if they stop replacing these things.

My final Nav VI lasted 2 weeks.

My 5th Nav VI lasted 2 weeks. Garmin Canada gave my a ZUMO XT to replace it. I purchased the adapter from Adapter 3D Motorrad to fit the Zumo XT to the gps preparation on my 2018 RT. I wasn't using the Wunderwheel with the Nav VI so I don't miss it now. I'm good with the Zumo XT.

ghosting? mythical being touching the screen? simple fix?

Elsewhere on the internet, people are saying and finding that cleaning the NAV VI with JUST WATER and maybe a clean paper towel stops the ghosting. Both in Europe and the US. Some tour groups clean their screens every few days.

One person mentioned that Garmin said/wrote their "new shipment (of NAV VIs or NAV VI screens) will arrive in a couple days," late February 2023.

3rd unit sent in

I spoke to Garmin Support and they are releasing a Revised Edition this summer. SUPPOSABLY, it will fix all these issues we all are having...

You guys might want to consider the Connected Ride cradle. Allows use of a smartphone with either Bmw's gps navigation or Google map. Simple, inexpensive, reliable...and does the job.

Came here to type this.

I'm kind of done with Garmin stuff. Their software is among the worst products I use. Probably gonna have both a 595 and 590 for sale after the first of the year at this point because the routing software is so miserable to use. It's 2023 and you still need to have a file loader to manage maps to go with your routing software?

If you have a lengthy route, you need to visit every place you're going to take a turn? Ugh.

The killer app, IMHO, will be a chat GPT style tool that allows you to say things like, "Make me a route to Eureka, using backroads, especially curvy ones. I'd like to stop about noon time and have a cheeseburger and then roll into Eureka and stay in a mid priced hotel."

And then have it build me a route, provide suggestions for lunch and hotel and then spit out a gpx I can load into my ConnectedRide app.

Whoever does that will demolish Basecamp.

Still like the Nav VI, and the use of the wonder wheel, but overtime the screen gets funky, I think , oh here we go again. This time I am sending it to an independent third party shop for repair, it may cost a little but hopefully it will "keep on ticking" like watches of old and carry me on many more adventures.

So...my NAV VI failed miserably with ghosting issues. Garmin replaced the unit with no questions. The "recalibrated" unit appears to be difficult to see in daylight. I have no real experience with Garmin map and directions during a trip. That said, I installed a RAM Mount to enable phone and google maps viewing when the Garmin fails.
Would have been nice to have the Garmin function 100% of the time b/c it is visually present on my dash...viewing of the phone on a Ram Mount is diminished due to sunlight.

I reached out to Garmin earlier this year and was told they were out of refurbished replacements but invited me to be put on a mailing list to be informed as to when more would be available. I have the ConnectedRide cradle but a) had too many syncing issues, and b) BMW's nav UI & features are VERY bare-bones compared to a dedicated satnav. So I said screw it and bought an XT2. Do I miss the Wonderwheel support? Yeah, but I got over it. The XT2 is better otherwise in every way and I don't regret it one bit.
