Can't Count

While changing oil in my bike (1994 R1100RS) I very carefully added 5+ quarts of oil (did not spill a drop) started it up immediately shut it off as something seemed not right. Now at a very slow idle bike making kind of squeaking noise on right side sounds like head gasket leak at slightly higher rpm do not hear noise.
I will except cheerfully all replies both those that might be helpful and those that might infer that I might be an idiot.
I have seen in the manuals many about overfilling oil can cause major problems so let me know what I should look for.
Bike on center stand front wheel not on ground could noise be from vibration of fairing parts, front fork televler stuff steering head bearings?
Bike has about 80,000 miles on it.

I've never owned a R1100 of any flavor but I thought they used a maximum of four quarts when changing oil.

Yeah, you’re over filled. Put a clean pan underneath and drain the oil then put enough back in so you can see it as the oil starts to appear in the sight glass. Get the level up around 1/2 or 3/4 up the glass. You also should open the drain at the bottom of the air box. You probably got oil collected in there too.

A minor thread hijack: I have never been able to get at the airbox drain on my R1100rt. Do I need to remove something in addition to the Tupperware?

Like a few other things on the bike, you have to be really flexible to get to the drain with just the fairing removed. If you pull the rear wheel, then you should have access to the bottom of the air box.

I had a brain fart twice I knew better than follow the owners manual and I used to be able to count to 4 correctly did I mention I was also trying out a oil filter from NAPA?
Thank you for reminding me about the air box drain I had also forgotten about it.
If you want to have some laughs at my expense, (it will cost you $5) I plan on being in Pecatonica, Illinois at the swap meet oddly enough in the Airhead area look for the flag.
Thanks again for the help

Airbox drain - yes small hands will help, but larger hands can do it:
With the black triangle removed (RT; so you can see), snake your hand up along the left side of the tire.
(Taking off the left tupperware really does help...)
With the bike cold, put a small paper or plastic cup on the exhaust pipe directly under the plug.
One-quarter turn counter-clockwise as viewed from underneath, and out it comes; just like the oil fill plug on the valve cover.
The "typical" amount that comes out is about a teaspoon or tablespoon; I've had a couple of cases that half-filled the cup. If it's never been done before, you may get a lot, and a new O-ring there may be a good idea. Wipe up what the cup didn't catch.

That 4.49 quarts (w/ filter change) really seems high - I've NEVER had to use more than 4.00 to get about 2/3 up the glass after starting & re-settling.

I just did that, and the little mushroom-shaped mounting spike at the front end of the triangle snapped off. :banghead Not like I haven't had that triangle off 100 times...like other things I won't mention, plastic gets brittle with age, I guess.

I can't find that part on the A&S Cycle or Bob's BMW fiches, but I'm guessing $175 to replace. Kinda steep for an 18 year old bike. Maybe I'll just give in to creeping rat-bike-ism and run a long, fat sheet metal screw through the plastic into the grommet in the frame.

Geez.

I think I used JB Weld to put one of mine back on. There is also an elegant repair somewhere online where a screw is epoxied in place and the mushroom tip is shaped somehow. Sorry I can’t be more specific

"Side panels, black" - Left side is 52 53 2 325 469; right is ...470.
Also inspect the little covers for the bottom tabs for cracks.
JB Weld will work on much of the plastics, but I haven't tried it on the black side pieces.
A little bit of silicone grease on the mating grommet will reduce the possibility of this happening again.

Since the positioning is fairly critical, put a little epoxy on one of the mating surfaces; join them and wrap with one small strip of blue painter's tape; then install the cover and let it dry in the right place.
Mike's recall of the screw is a good tip; a small pin (drilling a small hole in each part of the plastic) would also work.

The spike on my 1100RT side thingy snapped off also. I drilled a hole thru it and use small black wire ties. I keep a dozen or so of 8in an12in in my tool kit. They do come in handy.

So, the thread got moved sideways, talking about the broken side pieces of the RT. How about getting back to the original poster - 179212 - did you correct the oil level and restart the motor?

Yes all seems well I have been working on the Airhead did oil change thought I had a memory only added about 1/2 a quart to much.
On the hi-jack someone is going to need a faring fix and will never remember they saw needed info in a I am a idiot I put to much oil in my bike thread.
