Somewhere...

...in central Virginia. Definitely looking forward to Das Rally! Planning to depart a week early and get lost meandering somewhere in Canada. :dunno Maybe see how far north I can ride before it's time to turn around and head toward Hamburg. Suggestions? :scratch Ideas? :idea There are NO wrong answers.

PA is the rust belt. In fact, we gave America what it has to rust......:brow

I know, but I figure I might be able to handle a straight south to north two-lane backroads shot up into New York which probably isn't any less rusty.

The other options are of course through Canada, via Duluth, or Sault Ste Marie (Soo Saint Marie in phonetic English) or Port Huron if I can stand the thought of being within 60 or so miles of Detroit or Flint. I really don't want to insult the people who for whatever reason find themselves living in these places. I really don't. But I do intend to insult the places, and the people who have over time made them the dreary places once great places have become.

p.s. For perspective, Masters in Urban Planning, University of Iowa, 1976 - 32 years as a planner, redevelopment specialist, and community development director - who currently dislikes many U.S. cities.

Paul,

US 219 is the most direct N-S route thru PA, but it is truly boring. The following isn't bad,

1) PA26 from the MD border to PA150 at Howard
2A) PA 150N to PA120N at Lock Haven then to PA144N beyond Renovo
2b) PA 150S to PA144N at Milesburg, then to Renovo.
3) PA 144N to PA 44N toward Olean NY
4) West of Olean, NY, US219 will take you into Hamburg

I don't want to 'side track' the original intent of this thread but: Coming from Nova Scotia.....What suggestions would you have for our ride from, say, Scranton, PA. (for this example) to Harrisonburg, VA without having to 'run with the 18+ wheel bulls" on the Interstates...especially in PA? We are visiting friends in Harrisonburg prior to the rally and we prefer to not mix with the truck antics on those interstates. If you have some suggestions then please feel free to PM me on this. - Bob

Nashua, NH

Chromehead from Nashua, NH., after 2-up to ST. Paul and Billings this should be easy.

.

Not a N-S route, but a few of our trips back to New Hampshire we would take Hwy 6 across northern Pa. then start to angle NE around the Finger Lakes area. This will be a little out of the way for you but as you known the shortest route is not the best.

Last year on our trip to NH we took the north route and dropped south at North Bay, went through Algonquinn Park, then took a ferry from Kingston to Wolfe Island, then another ferry to Cape Vincent NY.
Before heading to a school reunion in Wanakena NY we spent a couple days along the St Lawrence River checking out the Thousand Islands and the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton NY.
If you like old wood boats take time to visit the museum.

That seals it. If Tulliver is going, I have to go. I'll be coming from LA. Lower Alabama. Big city traffic is scary so I'll be planning a route, if possible, that would avoid as many congested eastern seaboard cities as possible. If only I knew a former city planner that lives out west somewhere that would be riding through Alabama on his way up that could help me plan a route and provide some companionship while on the road...:scratch

Which route to take to avoid heavy traffic, cities and trucks? Assuming it's still possible to get paper maps, look for the blue highways. This recommendation is based on Blue Highways, an autobiographical travel book, published in 1982, by William Least Heat-Moon, born William Trogdon

Two of us on R1200RTWs riding from Newport News, VA. Will take I 64W(to get out of town) to Staunton, Va. Pick up US 250W to Us 219N, to Hamburg. Nice ride.

Cary, NC

Planning on taking 2 lane roads via the back of the Dragon, Claw of the Dragon and wander through WV into Ohio, maybe to Detroit and around Lake Erie.

Love that book!

I forget the roads, but there were some north/south roads running parallel to 219 that were nice riding. We picked them up near Pulaski VA and followed them all the way to NY State. US 219 itself was pretty decent in sections, but taking the hillier routes going in the same direction uncovered some gems!

Thanks Pete. I'll start some preliminaries on the planning process. Just off the top of my head drawing a line between here and there pits me through some of the greatest riding in the world. NorthWest North Carolina.

Long way over...then around...then some other direction...

Coming from North West Arkansas by way of New Hampshire and Quebec. Definitely not the shortest distance between two points!

From Charlotte, NC area. Could be done in 1 day, but plan to leave Wednesday and stop for the night and finish up Thursday AM. Still working on the route. Will be the first "long" trip on the GTL.
