Switched hot wire for Auxiliary lights

Hi All-

I have purchased a pair of auxiliary LED lights mounted on the crash bars of my ‘78 R100/7. I would appreciate any suggestions of a switched power wire to access for power, preferably in the headlight shell. I have found one on the headlight relay, but wondering if others have used something different.

In the day, BMW provided auxiliary light kits ... bracket mounted for non faired and S bikes, and fairing mounted for R100RT.

The left light was a pencil beam and was wired to the same circuit that powered the high beam filament in the headlight. This means the white wire.

The right light was a fog beam and was wired to a switch that got its power from the low beam circuit. This means the yellow wire.

As you can see, both auxiliary lights were not illuminated at the same time. Not enough alternator. Plus those two beams at same time is nonsensical.

Your LEDs don't draw anywhere near the current as halogen bulbs, so you could light them both simultaneously without problem. This only makes sense, of course, if they are both the same beam pattern, which I'd guess they were.

If you want them on with both high and low beam headlight, I'd suggest the parking light/tail light/instrument light circuit, but with a relay. That circuit is fused. You can remove fuses one at a time to find it ... which I say because I think it's a gray wire but memory may be incorrect. This isn't the best solution if you intend using the parking position on the ignition switch, however ... unless you add a switch.
