R75/5 Advanced Timing

On a 1971 R75/5, ignition timing is too far advanced (continuity tester comes on around the "F" mark instead of "S."), even with the ignition base plate turned clockwise as far as it will go. New points have been installed and gapped. Anyone have any idea what's wrong?

What is the points gap set to? I suspect you're using the stock 0.016". The gap can vary somewhat with no issues for the ignition, maybe down to 0.012 or up to 0.022. Changing the gap a small amount can have a big effect on timing. So with it being too advanced, I'd close the gap...if I have that right. Be sure and put the points plate back in the middle of the range so you have some adjustability back.
 
Hi, I have a similar issue to Fred. When doing static timing the S appears at the top of the window but when I go to retard the timing the ignition plate is turned clockwise as far as it will go. Points gap is set to 0.016 and bike is a 1974 R90/6. Will try what Kurt suggested i.e. reducing the points gap and placing the plate back in the middle of the range. Any other suggestions are welcome.
 
FYI, .013 or .014" usually gets you right in the ballpark and the correct dwell angle. .016" creates the problem you described.
