Outstanding Rider Awards

Along with the vendors, seminars, demo rides, and such at the “Be The Adventure” BMW MOA international Rally, there were a group of riders who entered the realm of the “big dogs” during their ride to Billings, MT. So take note of these names and expect to hear more stores about them over then next few years.

The Youngest Female Riders were Ann Martens, 18 years, 1 month, and 22 days, from Colorado; Cierra Reynolds, 18 years, 2 months, and 13 days, from Missouri; and Madeline Belken, 19 years , 5 months, and 16 days, from California. Youngest Male Riders were Timothy Urban, 16 years, 10 months, and 21 days, from Pennsylvania; Nathan Gee, 16 years 10 months, and 26 days, from Colorado; and Liam Mallivary, 17 years, 9 months, and 29 days, from Illinois. It is pretty easy to see that our riding community will be in good hands for years ahead.

For the Youngest Saddle Passenger, Santiago De La Mora, 10 years, 6 months, and 4 days rode behind his father all the way from Jauslo, Mexico! The Youngest Sidecar Passenger was Nathan Gifford, 6 years, 3 months, and 13 days, from Pennsylvania.

At the other end, the Oldest Female Rider was Alice Hanes, 83 years, 11 months, and 24 days, from Illinois. The Oldest Male Rider was David Carter, 90 years, 8 months, and 4 days, from Oklahoma. And the Oldest Saddle Passenger was Sharon Hautau, 74 years, 9 moths and 13 days, from Michigan.

Combinations come next with the Oldest Combination of Rider / Passenger / and Bike was Ernst and Brigitte Wagner at 183 years, 5 months, and 3 days, from Illinois. The Oldest Combination of Rider and Bike was Sam Ott at 114 years, from Washington. The Oldest BMW Ridden to the Rally was a 1962 R69S, piloted by Thomas Homan from Iowa.

Now for what we do best. The Long Distance Female Solo Rider and Long Distance Male Solo Rider were Marilyn Wright and Sandy MacLeod with 2,886 miles, from Nova Scotia. Long Distance Male Rider 2 Up was Frank and Amanda Clark, with 2,241 miles, from New Hampshire. And the North American Tour Award goes to Douglas Reed, with 14,418 miles, from Florida. Long Distance Sidecar Rider was Jonathan Gifford, with 1972 miles, from Pennsylvania.

The Largest Traditional Chartered Club was the BMW Motorcycle Club of Minnesota, with 51 members present. And most impressively, the Largest Virtual Club was the GS Giants, with 202 members present.

Wrapping it up, the GS Giant Track Winner was Dennis Godwin from California, and The GS Giant was John Glisinki, from Wisconsin.

Yes, there are riders and then there are outstanding riders!

Wow - thanks for sharing for those of us who were not able to come. Impressive in every category.

I was working at the awards table when a youngish fellow came in and said he was interested in entering the International Tour Award. He said he had been on the road continuously for over three years and had amassed 176,000 miles in several different countries. He was prepared to present his passport, journal and other documentation to prove his case. We'll never know if he would have proved he deserved the award, because he ultimately said he rode a KLR. Too bad. Averaging nearly 60,000 miles a year for three years on a KLR deserves some sort of recognition, if not hospitalization. :)

As it is a BMW Rally our first "loyalty" does go to BMW motorcycles and riders. That said, because of situations like this we are planning appropriate recognitions in the future.

The real reason I don't go to nationals is because if I did, MOA would have to create a whole new award category: "ugliest rider on the prettiest bike that rode the shortest distance," award.

Interestingly, we really did have a number of riders who asked if they could apply for an "ugliest rider" award. Sadly I would have had a serious conflict of interest in the competition as the folks in the next booth were saying I should win hands down.
:)
