In May 2007 the iconic motorcycle adventure rides again. Their 15,000-mile journey on two BMW R 1200 GS Adventure motorcycles starts at John O'Groats, Scotland and finishes at the most southern point of South Africa - Cape Agulhas. The tour will take 20 spectacular countries in total, covering Libya, the Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Botswana and the wilds of the Namibian Skeleton coast. Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman have carefully planned their route to visit those countries and several UNICEF sites which they feel will provide inspiration and power to themselves and others.
"I can't imagine not ever thinking about some adventure," said Ewan McGregor. "Long Way Round changed us all - it bonded us all together and made our dreams come true - and it's not often something like that happens. Long Way Down is something you can not only daydream about, but actually do."
Regarding his exploits in the "Race To Dakar" last year, Charley Boorman has been eager to return to Africa and see more of this amazing continent. "A few weeks after Long Way Round we had maps out already for the next big world journey - and Africa seemed like the obvious choice."

Long Way Down is being produced and directed by Russ Malkin of Big Earth and David Alexanian of Elixir Films, who have witnessed and documented Ewan and Charley's previous Long Way Round and Race To Dakar adventures.

Ewan and Charley will be supporting UNICEF, CHAS and Riders for Health on their travels and the www.longwaydown.com website will keep fans updated with all the latest information on the trip, including the opportunity to view unreleased footage and pre-order copies of the book and DVD. The Long Way Down television series will be shown on the BBC in Autumn/Winter 2007.

"eCall": new horizons in emergency rescue BMW Group Forschung und Technik and Bavarian Red Cross develop end-to-end emergency call scenario

M??nchen/Straubing. At a demonstration in Straubing, BMW Group Forschung und Technik and the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK) today presented a prototype of an "eCall" emergency rescue system featuring continuous data transmission. Following an accident, a call - generated either automatically or by one of the vehicle's occupants pressing a button - transmits precise details of the vehicle's location to an emergency rescue centre. The emergency rescue centre communicates with the vehicle if possible, then alerts a paramedic, ambulance team or helicopter. The eCall prototype jointly developed with the BRK then automatically provides directions to the scene of the accident, relaying this information wirelessly to the navigation system in the rescuers' vehicle. The continuous transmission of precise GPS data enables seriously injured accident victims to be located quickly and efficiently, allowing the rescuers to gain valuable seconds. The automated directions likewise speed up response times.

"With this research project, the two partners are presenting an emergency rescue solution which could offer a way of saving even more lives in the future," says Alfred Reisinger, District Council Chairman and president of the local inter-municipal rescue and fire response service. Project Manager Dr Hans-J?Ârg V?Âgel of BMW Group Forschung und Technik explains: "As vehicle manufacturers, we are involved in researching and developing active and passive safety systems. Since emergency call technology is such an important part of this, we decided to join forces with the emergency rescue centre in Straubing to develop this prototype."

Practical implementation of this solution follows on from the Global System for Telematics (GST) research project co-funded by the EU, in which 49 partners spent 36 months establishing the specifications for an open telematics architecture. The aim of the project, which was completed in early 2007 and included automatic emergency call technology (eCall) as one of its subprojects, was to promote improved inter-vehicle networking. The partners are currently looking ahead to the next stage in the project, involving Europe-wide field trials.

BMW Forschung und Technik GmbH is a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW AG and has since 2003 been responsible for the following research topics within the BMW Group: VehicleTechnology, CleanEnergy (hydrogen technology), EfficientDynamics (intelligent energy management/alternative drives), ConnectedDrive (driver assistance systems/active safety) and ITDrive (IT and communication technology). Its status as an independent limited company ensures greater scope for creativity and maximum flexibility. Access to global trends and technologies is provided by an international network comprising centres in the USA (Palo Alto, CA and Clemson, SC) and Japan (Tokyo) along with the liaison offices Eur?®com (Sophia Antipolis) in France and DFKI GmbH (German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence) in Saarbr??cken, Germany.

BMW Group achieves new sales record in April

Munich. In April this year, the BMW Group delivered 118,456 automobiles to customers, which is 3.0% above the figure for the same month last year (114,996). The company has never sold as many cars in an April before. For the year to the end of April, volume sales achieved by the BMW Group rose by 0.8% to 451,683 automobiles (prev.yr.: 447,944). Seen individually, the three Group brands, BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce, also all recorded an increase in April and for the year to the end of April.
As already reported, after a restrained start to 2007 due to model cycle factors, the company is expecting dynamic growth over the next few months, and growth in the high single-digit range on a yearly basis. This will mainly be powered by the reworked models of the BMW 5 Series, the new BMW 1 Series three-door version, coming in May, the new generations of the BMW 3 Series Coup?® and Cabrio and the new BMW X5.

Dr. Michael Ganal, member of the Board of BMW AG responsible for sales and marketing, said: "With every single one of our new models, we are proving the fact that combining the ultimate driving experience with reduced CO2 emissions is not a contradiction in terms. The outstanding popularity in the market of our new cars in particular proves this most impressively."

Sales of the BMW 3 Series Cabrio in April 2007 reached 5,189 units
(prev.yr.: 2,562), which is 102.5% above last year's figure. The 3 Series Coup?® stands at 6,819 vehicles sold, which is almost four times (+275.3%) the previous year's level (1,817). Sales of the BMW X5 have also rocketed, with an increase of 45.6% to 8,653 (prev.yr.: 5,941). And the BMW 5 Series, with 18,254 units sold, has also exceeded the previous year's figure (18,096) by 0.9%.

Altogether, the BMW brand increased its sales in April 2007 slightly by 0.5% to 100,141 units (prev.yr.: 99,622). This means that for the first time ever more than 100,000 BMW brand automobiles were delivered to customers in an April. For the year to the end of April, the number of deliveries to customers (382,945) also rose slightly by 0.9% to 386,273.

The new generation of MINI is now available in all the major markets worldwide. This caused sales to rise by 19.2% in April to 18,263 MINI sold (prev.yr.: 15,323). For the year to the end of April 2007, the world's most successful small car in the premium segment is 0.6% above last year, with 65,245 deliveries to customers (prev.yr.: 64,841).

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars delivered 52 Phantoms in April (prev.yr.: 51/+2.0%). In the first four months of 2007, 165 cars were handed over to customers
(prev.yr.: 158/+4.4%).

In the motorcycles segment sales figures rose in April by 1.0% to 12,320 units
(prev.yr.: 12,200). For the year to the end of April, 13.2% more BMW vehicles (35,348 units) were sold than in the same period last year (31,237).
