How to remove cap on outside of differential

I've searched extensively but haven't found one. If anyone knows of one, I'd be indebted to know about it.

As far as a replacement cover, was thinking I could fabricate one from delrin or some material like that.

I'm wondering about the purpose of the cap itself other than aesthetics as it's completely open on the wheel side.
 
Wheel side

I am not 100% sure of the make up of seals and stuff on the wheel side of the final drive but, I would think perhaps the wheel would provide some protection from "stuff" getting directly into places it shouldn't. Were as removing the cap in question would allow said "stuff" into a place is surely isn't wanted? That cap is there to protect something BMW felt was worth protecting with it. Just saying. St.
