Bleeding rear brake

Today I decided to bleed the rear brake on fairly new to me 82 R100rs. It's always been a little mushy with too much pedal travel compared to my other airhead with the same Brembo disk. I pulled the caliper away from the disk so that I could rotate the nipple up to make it easier to get any air out of the system. Applied pressure to brake pedal and opened the bleeder and got some air bubbles and fluid out and then closed and repeated. Never did get the brake pedal to "pump up" after many repetitions.Anyone out there able to give me a suggestion on what I should try or what I might be doing wrong? Only thing I can think of is I might be getting air into the system between the bleeder and the caliper body.
