Brilliant Weekend for BMW Motorrad Motorsport
Marco Melandri brought BMW home with its first double in World SBK. With the double victory BMW climbed the Manufacturer Championship standings from P3, as the weekend started, to P2 after Race 1 and to P1 after Race 2. In the process he narrowed Biaggi's Rider Championship lead to 21 points. BMW left 2011 Brno in P4 of the Manufacturer Championship. The results are a brilliant weekend for both team and rider.
Team and riders have until August 8 to savor the lead. That is when they defend their Manufacture Championship lead atSilverstone and Melandri has his next opportunity to reel in Biaggi. If they are wise they will savor it until after breakfast on Monday and get down to business. They face several serious challenges.
Kawasaki
Sykes and his Z have been the 2012 qualifying masters. To their dismay and pleasure of others they have not been able to turn pole positions into consistent race wins. Going into the Brno round they felt they had overcome that obstacle. Misfortunes of loosing Race 1 and Race 2 in the closing laps has be frustrating but sill should give their confidence a major lift. Melandri seemed able to press forward while managing himself. He pressure Sykes and took him in the end for the double.
However, Sykes and his Z seem on the verge of taking poles, controlling the middle of the race and holding off the competition in the final laps. They were so close in Brno yet a podium step away from the double in Brno. Incremental gains in tyre management for Team Green could have Sykes doing the double in Britian instead of anyone else.
Aprilia
Biaggi retains his lead in the Rider Championship while Aprilia slips to P2 in the Manufacturer standings. In both cases their time on the top of the respective standings has been more a case of consistant performance than run away brilliance. Placing three bikes in the top 8 Race 2 finishers is an example of this. Laverty clearly has been in the points hunt. My sense is the slip to P2 in the Manufacture Championship will make their resolve for a good result at Silverstone even greater.
Ducati
Aprilia and Yamaha shown bright in the same rounds in 2011 only to see Ducati and Checa take 6 of the ten wins of the the remaining season. Neither team nor rider seem as strong in the current season but neither should be discounted. Checa took a double at Silverstone in 2011 and the break after that race will give them time to prepare for new event at Moscow.
Honda and Suzuki
At this point in the season these teams are in the spoiler role. Honda is able to run in the front at times but not with the consistency needed to mount any kind of a charge in the closing half of the season. Suzuki continues to turn in solid blue collar performances in a white collar season. Either can literally or figuratively take the other teams out of the championship hunt.
BMW's Brno double at the hand of Meladri clearly a brilliant result. The season arc appears heading in a very positive direction. Season arcs are not zero sum gains. Each team continues to work to improve. A single period can show significant gains for a team when compared to their past performance. The true measure in racing is how those gains compare to the competition's progress.
Enjoy BMW's first double. The work begins anew after breakfast Monday.
