Wheels: R1100 & K1200

There has been mention of putting a K1200LT wheel on a R1100RT. Is it simply a matter of swapping any naked K1200 wheel onto my ‘98 Oilhead?

Tire choices for the Oilhead RTs seem to be limited.

Yes - but - you will need four new bolts. There is a 5mm difference in length. I forget which is which but one wheel needs 55mm bolts and the other needs 60mm bolts. Measure the bolts you take out and then get 4 of the other size. Ignore the center hole in the K1200 wheel.

I did this on my R1100RT.

There's a 5.0" wide and allegedly a 5.5" wide K1200LT wheel, the 5.0" will fit an R1100RT, with the appropriate bolts as Paul said. The 5.0" wheel is part 36 31 2 331 909. Wheel bolt is 36 31 2 333 225, 55mm. The spacer is the same.

Michelin says it takes a 160/70R17 which is a touch taller than the stock 18" tires.

I tried the Metzler bias ply ME880 for tire life and it was almost unrideable - way too stiff.

I also tried a Continental ContiMotion tire because it was cheap, that rode fine.

The K wheel is a 5-spoke and doesn't match the front wheel, if that bothers you. Not really noticeable behind the bags.

Of course you may crash and burn because this is not an approved modification, try at your own risk.
