West Virginia Dreaming

ricochetrider

Out There Somewhere
Yeah, so I'm thinking I MIGHT have a chance this week for some saddle time away from home.
West Virginia has been on my mind for some while now.

Thinking I might ride out the PA turnpike then down US 219 from Somerset PA into the mountains and take the scenic Rte 150 down to 55 and ride that over to 20, taking 20 down to US 60 and ride west towards Charleston on 60. I guess the idea is to get to the WV/OH border and ride upriver on the Ohio side, sticking to the riverside, back up to Wheeling. Probably jump on I-70 and jet home from there.

Obviously, there's some holes in the planning... Anyone know the central part of WV? It seems I could conceivably have 4 days to make a loop out of my home near Harrisburg, PA- as I have to work Tuesday daylight and Sunday evening...

Suggestions? Tips? Restaurants/eats, cool old motels? I probably wouldn't camp this time around but prefer mom-n-pop or cool 1950s/60s style motor hotels and I'll definitely avoid chain restaurants. I'd be up for cabin rentals in or near National forests or Nat'l Recreation areas if that possibility exists?

Hi thanks for the input. Both of those might just work out well for me. Seems I could jet down 219, make a loop and swing back up,to Webster Springs and stop for the night?

Not sure which bike I'll ride yet- it'll be either my 93 R100RS or my 03 K1200RS... Either way, I'll be hoping to stay mostly on paved roads.

Be sure to catch the Highland Scenic Highway south of Snowshoe off 219.
66 at Snowshoe to Cass is good.
All of route 39 is good.
And if you have time 250 & 33 are two of the best roads down there. They run east & west across the mountains into Virginia.

I've ridden all of the routes previously mentioned. They are made for the K12RS!

:D Yeah no doubt- but I get such a kick out of riding the airhead....
Which actually gets pretty dismal gas mileage for some reason!?!?
Being as I plan on doing some connector stretches of slab... Currently leaning towards the K12.
Just had a pretty sweet 100 mile ride around home on it. The more I ride it, the more I appreciate its suspension.

The Highland Scenic Highway is, well, scenic but not particularly twisty. It's a road of long flowing road that meanders through the hills. Everything else including 250 (my favorite road there) is great. If it's the right place for this, the Brazenhead Inn near Snowshoe on 219 is a great and friendly place to motorcyclists. Warm hospitality, often great music, and always good food.

Hey thanks for the tips and chit chat, everybody. Heading out in a few minutes to see where my front wheel leads me. Will post some pix upon my return. Calling for S N O W (NOAA forecast) in the mountains Friday!
Woo hoo.
