Vario adjustment sticks

I have a pair of BMW Vario side cases for my F650GS Twin. On the bike for 60,000 mi. They have worked well, but now are so stiff / sticky when adjusting from "thin" to "wide" that I'm afraid of breaking the plastic gears inside the walls of the sliding mechanism.

Can anyone recommend a fix or lubricant (that is plastic compatible)? I've tried WD-40, but it is hard on plastic and the volatile compounds in WD-40 evaporate - esp. in hot weather - and then just leaves sticky "gunk".

The stiffness / stickiness seems to be because the double side walls into which the moving part slides in-and-out warps, shrinks - or is otherwise dimensionally unstable with age.

If they are the black (mostly) plastic cases, I give mine a shot of "food grade" silicone every now and then. It's kept them working pretty ok so far.
