Hi All The rear U joint failed on my brothers bike and we were looking at the fiche to find the part # and there doesn't appear to be one.
Does anyone know the number and are they replaceable or do we need to replace the whole drive shaft?
thanks in Advance

Individual drive shaft components are not available from BMW. The bearings are staked in and not removable for replacement. You have to buy a complete driveshaft from BMW, unless you can find a used one.
Another option, assuming the yoke isn't damaged too bad, is Bruno's Machine and repair. He does rebuilds on BMW driveshafts and the finished product does have replaceable u joints that can be lubed (just like in the old days). His website is http://www.brunos.us/contact_us.html .
One of his rebuilt drive shafts sits in my '05 GS and I can attest to the quality of the work. But, be patient, he's busy.

Just to clarify:
That is a Hex head thread, different model of shaft and more prone to failure than the Oilheads.
I understand your concern, if the OP wasn't real familiar with the failure, It gives them something to look at. There is a nice picture of a repair by VEGASGSA, apparently similar to what Bruno's would do.

Update

Hi All
so finally got the bike to my shop and took it apart and it was the front u-joint that failed, and it pretty much destroyed the driveshaft and scored up the outer cover, so new parts ordered from e-bay and repairs to finish when they arrive .
thanks for all the input
