Transmission Oil

Hi all,

This weekend I made the big step and did my first home tune-up. Everything went just peachy. Boy, they sure make these bikes easy to work on. As noted here, synthetic oil in the gearbox makes it shift better.

My call for comment here is that my old transmission oil was rust or mud colored, kind of like thin sludge. There was a decent cone of crud attached to the magnetic point of the drain plug also. As compared with the final drive oil which looked as if it had just been poured from a new bottle. Is it normal for trannies to do that to their oil?

Also I noticed going through the archives here, two different specs are called for when using the BMW synth oil for trans and final drive. But at the shop they sold me two bottles of the same stuff. Does it make that much of a difference?

I use the same in both and so far no problems at all. That doesnt sound good having rust colored goop cpming out of the tranny. I would be keeping an eye out on the seals, and probably change it again real soon. I have the feeling you have had water infiltrate the transmission at one point of another.

Go for a good ride, and change it while it is still warm, and hopefully you will get more of the stuff out of there in suspension.

MOBIL 1 75W/90......in both the tranny / final drive of my '03 RT.

But....I have been considering going to MOBIL 1 90w/140 in the tranny. :thumb

I use Redline Heavy Shockproof synthetic gear oil in my 94 RS tranny. I know many other RS owners also use it because they recommended it to me. It is very thick and has a reddish colour, sort of like a strawberry milkshake (but not as tasty I'm sure). Could be that's what you drained out. It is very viscous and clingy oil, which helps to dampen the rattles and clunks in the gearbox. Makes the shifting very nice.

Any opinons about the bmw 75w140 synthetic? I used it in an airhead and it improved the shifting noticably. The main problem I see is that it is ~$15 per quart.

How much is the mobil 1 (of same viscosity)? Is there any noticable difference?

MOBIL 1 only makes the tranny lube in 75w/90 or 90w/140.

The 75w/90 is approx. $7.00 qt.

The 90w/140 is closer to $17.00 qt. and no.....I haven't figured out why the big price difference between the two.

I've even asked the clerks at the places it is sold, and they are stymied as well in regards to the pricing. :dunno
