Swing arm and drive shaft question.

Pubmechanic

New member
I had my drive shaft and swing arm on my R60/6 inspected and was told the universal joint was worn out. I was instructed that it was best to find a used swing arm with a good drive shaft to replace it. Is this feasable, or is there comapny that can do replacements while keeping the original swing arm.

Just out of curiosity, how many miles on your driveshaft/bike, what symptoms of being worn out does it show or sound like, have you had it off the bike???

I am curious as to how many miles on your bike?

Reason: My 1977 R100RS had 526,000 + miles on it with the same drive shaft, and it was not worn out. Many thousands of miles 2 up pulling a trailer.

just sayin' !

Of course there is. Here, read this > http://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?52180-Drive-Shaft-U-Joint

In my personal experience, used, and good, seldom occur at the same time.

air head driveshaft repair

I had the u joint replaced on my 88 r100rs at a place in Wisconsin that repairs marine drive trains. Call them and tell them what you need and they will tell you how to pack it and ship to them. The price was $182.00 with shipping. They had it repaired and back to me in less than a week. The name of the company is Machine service inc. 1000 Ashwauenon st. Green Bay Wi. . Their phone number is 920-339-3000 . I hope this helps you out

Bike has give or take 300,000 miles. This is the first complete tear down. Started a thread two months ago in regards to getting the engine off. The U-Joint seems to have some play in it that I was told meant it was worn. Looks wise it is great; no rust or ugly wear. Just some green looking paint on it...?

Before you do anything else... post your where-bouts in your profile. It will help others help you. You never know who's just around the corner to help.

Time for a repair or replace, like you say, just to be safe.........Post some more updates as to what is going on with the bike. Sure glad you are making the efforts to keep it going......

There are a few folks around that will replace the U joint. Do a search and you'll find several names. I had the u joint replaced in my R75/6. With that kind of miles you might be further ahead to just buy a new one from Motobins as the splines are likely getting worn on yours.
