San Jose GSPD fork brace installed

sgborgstrom

Don't forget your towel
SJBMW got a new fork brace to me in record time.

Raw cast aluminum, much more robust looking than the stocker

I gave it a coat of spray-on truckbed liner so it would blend in a little bit better with the rest of my bike. You can see here how wimpy the thin original piece looks.

Installation was about a 15 minute affair, 5 bolts total; 4 to the fork tubes and one to the brake line bracket

It started snowing while I was doing this or I would tell you how it works. The weather guy says we are in for a Pineapple Express (warm and very wet) pattern for a few days...

Will this fit an R90/6? And, how much did you pay? Also, once you get it on the road could you let me know your impressions in terms of stability and ride. Thanks.
Rb

No, this brace is for the GS series only. For the /6 I think you are looking for:

Part No. 125-B7
Fork Brace - Tubular
This sturdy tubular steel fork brace holds fork tubes in precise alignment and exerts a self-aligning torque as cornering forces increase. Provides smoother fork action, sharper steering response and more stable, predictable handling. Fits most Airhead twins from 74-80. Direct bolt on for all with "S" style fender, other fenders may require some drilling.
Notes: OUT OF STOCK

Price: $169.95

Please note the "note" about it being out of stock. The brace for my GS was only$79.95

San Jose is probably still making the braces for the older twins as well. I have their brace on my R100/7 for 20 years now and it is a tubular design alright, mounting over the top of the fender, instead of the under fender stock unit. Works quite nicely, too. Randy13233:thumb

I know this is an older thread, but do you recall if the front loops protrudes more than the rear loop? Or is it the otherway around...I didn't notice the difference when I removed mine to change finders. :dunno

Any pictures would be appreciated.

Looks good. I have a Telefix that works well. I think a fork brace on airheads is a prudent move.

I ordered the SJ tubular fork brace for my 84 RS last July along with the top clamp. The clamp was delivered but the brace was delayed due to vendor problems. Apparently, the fabricator who now has the jigs, has been unable to make the brace to spec yet and SJ is having communication issues with him. After waiting several months, I requested a refund. The part is still not available and they don't have an estimate. My contact at SJBMW is Chris Hodgson. Call or write: (408) 295-0205, chris@sjbmw.com.

Hopefully, they'll have this part available again, soon.

So, I have a Telefix Brace, but I can't figure how to install with gaters in place???
The brace fits to the tops of the aluminum tubes. So what do you do with the gators. If you used the 90S fork sliders the you can't attach the brace??

So do you just do away with the gators and rubber wipers?:scratch

I had a Telefix my '84 R100 and still managed to have the gaiters on. I don't remember quite how it worked, but I do remember that it took a bit of work to get the gaiters on. Isn't there a lip on the upper side that the gaiters will fit over?

here's a pic of mine mounted. looks like the rear sticks out more.

Easier adjustment

Is with the Telefix type. You can adjust the center brace versus the side clamps. The tubular ones require shimming - most of the time people wind up inducing stiction with the tubular ones, I suspect. And you have to deal with it every time you do seals or whatever.

On my bike, the brace protrudes the most. It was installed by San Jose BMW in 1985. Hope this helps.
