Roadster top speed

I have seen 120 on the speedo once while seeing "what this puppy will do", but with the accuracy of the BMW speedo in question, I am not sure what I was actually doing. I have a 96 850R.
 
lorazepam is your 850 geared lower than an 1100? Is the engine smoother than an 1100? Does the 1100 have considerably more power than the 850. How fast or what rpm does it like to cruise at. Thanks, JON

The 850 is geared the same as the 1100, and all engine specs are the same except for the bore. I dont know what the HP lists for the 1100, but mine is listed at 76. I would imagine in a drag race, the 1100 would pull away, but in real world riding, I doubt there is much difference in rideability. I tend to keep the revs above 4k, and if I am in a hurry, I dont mind riding around 6k. It will pull fine from around 3k on up, but as Kbasa has finally convinced me, these motors like to rev above 5k. the power feels very linear and predictable from 4k all the way up to the rev limiter. Once I got the carbs syncronized and the TPS set properly, I dont have any trouble with surging. I dont see a need for any more engine than I have, this bike will run all day 2 up on the slab, or carving the backroads without any problems at all. It handles great, and feels like a smaller bike once you get it going. Very much fun to ride on the twisty roads that abound in my neck of the woods. If you are looking for a rush of power, or something that screams up to 11k rpm, look elsewhere. If you want a comfortable, quiet, reliable, dependable machine that handles great look no further. I got a gps from santa, and I will try to see what the actual top speed is once the weather warms up, and I can get back to my secret leo free test area.

Lorazepam, thanks for the information. How about handling, and rider comfort? Can you do thousand mile days? Can you get an after market screen that will eliminate buffetting. JON
 
I have the optional BMW windscreen, and in most cases it does just fine. Cee Bailey's makes a replacement that is larger, and Aeroflow makes a screen that looks like a barn door compared to mine. I imagine one of those would offer more protection, but the larger the windscreen, the greater the potential for handling problems at high speeds. I would not see any problem doing a thoousand miles in a day on this bike just like it is. The limiting factor would be my ass, and the time to do it.
 
I have a Roadster and I have gone 115 mph at redline 7,000 rpm.
That was 2-up with luggage. It's not a Oilhead it's a
1992 R100R, not stock.:burnout
 
I have had both an R850 and 1100 Roadsters. Have seen and indicated 120 mph, but I believe the actual speed to be closer to 105 mph, minus or plus a tad.

The final drive on the 850 is different than the 1100. 1100 uses a 3.0 final drive and the 850 uses a 3.36.
 
Jon, I was going by my (not so trusty) Clymer manual on the specs I quoted. I guess no one is perfect.
 
I've seen 105 on the speedo and there was more umpf available. I use the Wudo fairing. Not as much protection as the OEM or Parabellum but the shape is very smooth in the air.
