Riding in Greece

My 2 brothers and I plan to ride in Greece this June. Other worldly riders have warned us that Greece is one of the most dangerous places for motorcyclists. Why? I'm asking for feedback from folks that have been there. What are the risks? Are the roads police patrolled? What are the tolerances?

It's been 5 years since I was there, so this could be old info, but I doubt it.

The city of Athens is okay, except terrible traffic if there are demonstrations. And the Greek writing and alphabet on signs didn't make it any easier for me! Lots of 1-way streets also.

Outside Athens the traffic isn't bad, but the roads range from good tarmac to cobblestone, potholes and dirt. Lots of tour vehicles and lots of tourists stopping when you least suspect. Really slippery on the cobblestones when wet.

Would I go there again? Absolutely! Most of the people are friendly to tourists. I suggest taking a tour of the sights (Parthenon, Acropolis, Olympic Stadium, etc). Parking is terrible at those sights, even for motorcycles. When out of the city don't bypass the Corinth Canal.

Uzo is the national drink. If you like black licorice taste you will love Uzo!

Be safe. Take lots of pictures. Looking forward to a ride report upon your return.

I was in Greece for four weeks last summer. It would scare me to death to drive/ride in Athens. I have driven/ridden is most of the big European cities and none of them are as bad as Athens. The traffic is congested. The drivers are horrible. The bikes/scooters are lane-splitting all the time. I'm glad I wasn't driving. Away from Athens the roads are okay and traffic isn't too bad but the scenery is beautiful.

As far as the signs go I didn't have too much trouble reading them because I can read Konie Greek (Common Greek or New Testament Greek). :p

Good comments...thanks. I'll let you know how we do.
