Replacement of Driveshaft Policy

Does this sound accurate? I have a 2015 R1200 GS with approximately 43k miles on it. BMW (Eurosport Asheville) informed me that the driveshaft cannot be replaced until the 72k mile service because I’ve already passed the 36k replacement window.

For background, at the time of the driveshaft recall (2022) my bike passed the vibration test when the drain plug modification was done to my bike.

Thanks in advance.

BMW changed the service schedule for the Wethead boxers.
The driveshaft service is now every 12,000 miles, and it's free.
If it fails on the next 12,000 mile check it sounds like it will be replaced.

That sounds like BS, as that's just inviting a failure - reach out to BMW NA to get clarification.

I am tracking it’s on a 12 maintenance cycle - but I was told it can only be replaced on the 72k service because the bike is already beyond 36k

THe bulletin says driveshaft mileage not vehicle mileage. If the shaft is over 36k, they owe you a free replacement.

I have reached out to BMW North America and have asked for clarification. I also asked what would happen if the driveshaft fails prior to the 72k mile service. In my opinion, the local dealership does not want to replace my driveshaft because I perform all my own maintenance.

The driveshaft is supposed to be inspected/tested/lubricated by the dealer every 12K miles. If the driveshaft fails the inspection it is replaced. It is replaced every 36K miles regardless. BMW is paying the dealer to perform the inspection and paying for the driveshaft and the labor to replace it if/when it fails. I'm on my third shaft in my '21 GSA at 66K miles.

Does anybody other than me find it ironic that on the 101st anniversary of the first BMW motorcycle driveshafts they now can't be counted on to last beyond 36,000 miles. The first one in Voni's R1100RS went 202,000 miles.

Considering the change in HP and torque output since the 1100, there are reasons... The 1100 had roughly 75 HP, the 1250 is roughly 135 hp, and the 1200 wethead is only 10 or so less...

My experience with right angle drive(s) makes me think the drive system needs to be about 40% larger to achieve longevity. :dunno

They're going to replace them at 36k and inspect whether they need replacement at every 12k maintenance/inspection interval.

So the OP will get his bike inspected and there'll be a decision at that point, I'd expect. :dunno

I think things will be alright as it is, at least for now. The "other" thread was referenced earlier in this thread.
