R65 Clutch - ‘80 vs ‘81

Hello Airheaders-

I posted the following on the R65 webpage but so far have failed to receive any feedback, hoping someone here can provide some commentary.

I recently purchased a 1980 R65 (build date 11/79) with approx 37k miles. I have read that the clutch/flywheel assembly was redesigned on the R65 for the model year 1981, which resulted in a lighter flywheel and modified clutch parts resulting in a better shifting experience. I’m curious to know if the difference is significant between the ‘80 and ‘81 models. And if so, is it possible or even worthwhile to update the clutch to later specs if needed. I recall lightening the flywheel for my ‘79 R100RS in an effort to improve gear shifting with marginal success, but unsure if this is the same issue.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Tom

I'm pretty sure it's definitely different across the '80 to '81 models. And it's not just the clutch parts. The input shaft on the transmission is a different length. I think you would have to replace the clutch/transmission assembly in order to go that route.

I have heard about the quicker shifting feature of the newer clutch. But the upside of the heavier earlier flywheel dampens the power pulses resulting in a bit more smoothness...the lighter clutch pack could end up being buzzier.
