R1150R system cases question

New member
Newbie to BMW and these fancy system cases. I just bought a 2004 R1150R and it came with system cases. The cases have a strap inside that prevents the cases from openning completely, Does that strap come off ?? I want to be able to lay the cases open flat , like a book or any other luggage. Can someone explain how the strap comes off , if it does. I just don't want to break it.

Next about how many miles do you get on a full tank until the low fuel light comes on ? I'm old-school, i like to set my trip-ometer on a fill up and monitor my fuel that way. Also about how many miles can you go once the low fuel light comes on.

thanks,
really looking forward to ridding this bike this season.

The out board end of the strap has a snap on it, simply twist off.

Usually the light comes on when there is 4 litres left in the tank. You will learn what mileage you get city/hwy and be able to judge from your odo as well.

Loaded for a trip my 2005 sometimes hits 200 miles before it comes on. I try to go just 30 miles after that.

Light

Wish there was a light to tell you the splines are about to puke!

If you pull the starter and put a light in the housing, you can estimate spline condition by measuring radial play.
A bit had on the neck unless you have a lift.

Ok So when do the splines take a puke ? who else has had this issue and when did it happen ?

Wecome to the forum! The question you have asked cannot be answered correctly by anyone because the answer is variable. You can however come to your own conclusions by reading dozens of threads on this issue. Try going to Google and typing "site:bmwmoa.org spline failure" without the quotes and see what comes up. Make sure you have several hours of free time available! :thumb

You've got a great bike there! I'm almost 64 and my first bike was an '02 R1150R in 6/01. I have 60,000 miles on it, but I also have 3 other bikes now. If you ever have problems with it suddenly cutting out, especially after washing it, watch the Hall Effect Sensor! My troubles took a long while to diagnose, 2 yrs!

My transmission blew at 57,000 miles, I had dealer replace with a new one and rebuilt the clutch.

If you find any surging issues, downshift. Your normal tach riding range should be 3,800-4,000 rpm.

Your footpeg rubbers are very consumable and easy to replace when worn, especially at your shifter foot. Replace to avoid wear on metal.

Watch your oil level, it does consume oil.

I get the gas light at around 150 miles and then I get 30 miles before fillup.

And, double check those bags every time you open them, I lost one once! Got to my destination and it was gone!

Enjoy that great bike!
