R100RS vs R100R - Trading thoughts...

Gee, I just really love my '81 RS. It's a great solo bike.
But my bones and my brains are starting to think of trading/selling it off for a 90's vin R100R paralever.

Wha'? Heck I just finished the RS, and have $8, count'em, $8K in it!
Just bought a new leather Corbin with back rest and new Ohlins so me and the wife would be comfy on those breakfast rides. Outside of those and the occasional 150-200 mile day loops, I'm not holding too well up doing anyway.
I guess I'm getting to where I've been there done that long ride on an airhead thang. I won't be doing 500 mile days again on the RS.

On the breakfast ride deal, yesterday it was pretty evident we're both getting to fat and old for such sporty ergos. Canyon riding at 35mph two-up is just a plain chore...

To digress, one of the best handling airheads I've had was my '91 R100GSPD.
Easy sit-up riding.
Enter the R100R. Always admired the sensible roadster look. Definitely prefer the paralever.

I'm keeping my eye out for the 'right' R100R, preferrably a black on black frame model.

But dang, what a nice RS I have...

I feel your pain, literally. I have a 78RS Motorsport with even more money in it than you. A couple of years ago I noticed that every time I rode it my left wrist would hurt for days. A set of K75S bars fixed that.

The RS is a special bike, to me anyway. Yours is beautiful and I think you would regret selling it to get a R. I have been thinking about letting mine go and have been shopping. But, every time I find something I think I want, I ride the Motorsport and that thought goes out the window.

My recommendation, there is always room for another bike next to the RS.

Too nice a bike to dump and chance getting something that needs a ton of $$. If it were mine, I would look for a different set of bars that give your back and neck some relief. I had an early 90s R100 S, and quickly found that it did not fit me. I was lucky that I found it out soon and was able to get a R 100 RT that fit me with only a minimal loss of $$.

Appreciate the insight.
The bike has K75 bars, ergos are quite suitable for me solo on 200 mille rides.
It's the bike and passenger thing that becomes less than desirable.
It is a fine, fine machine. But I have another sportier and comfier standard for the longer stuff that she can't/won't ride on.
I figure the R100R would suit the airhead needs and her too...

I know where as you speak...My 83 RS was a fine piece, but after a while I felt twisted...even with K bars. I now enjoy the comfort of my RT. But I have to say that I have always liked the 100R's

There is a sweet 92 Black R100R for sale out here in NM. Listed in Santa Fe Craigslist for $2900. Too bad you are not closer.

you may be tempted for many reasons,yours to get an r100r,and happy you may be ,but what you wont have is that beautifull 81 rs,
my self I installed an rs fairing to my 1977 r100s way back in 1985,340,000km this year, due to arthritis in my hands and knees and age 63, I too was tempted,lucky for me my brother changes bikes all the time,one of which was an r100r with an s fairing installed,like the photo which I rode very nice perhaps the best boxer I have ridden,when asked by a passer by how long I had owned it I found I was very quick to tell him that I owned the bike my brother was riding,why?
because I love my bike and have tons of great memories,so what did I do ? I replaced the RS fairing with an RT off one of my brothers purchases, and love it (for health reasons)rode home from the 4 winds rally via Ohio to s/w Ontario,900 km in the rain, I still have the bike I love so much, but can still put in the long rides
sorry for being long winded, but you may make a really big mistake ,also I sold my 1962 BSA 650 rocket gold star when my daughter was born way back in 1973 I still regret , and miss that one .but it is your decision good luck, Jimmy

hi ,just talked with my brother about the R100R, he sold it in the summer as usual, but since then it had the starter (valeo) die, and the inner out put shaft gearbox bearing collapsed !!it was an 1994 with 53,000 km !
theres a saying in Ireland (better the devil you know than the one you dont)

Well, I have one of both and the best off both worlds. My R100R does not have the S fairing it is naked, but that way I have both worlds. I am a rounder and love both bikes... I made a decision a few year ago that I will not sell either bike and only add to the garage, rather than take away from it.... as far as the black dash, I think you can order it is black or chrome, but it plastic so you can easily paint it... That is what I did... I motified it to mount a GPS and actually cut it and painted it black.... I actually prefer the Mystic dash set up, but I am willing to cough up $500.00 to change it over... so customizing I did... The Mystic dash looks different but it is metal and not flimsy plastic... my food for thought...

Honestly, I can't imagine giving up my RS. I have stock RS bars on it as well. I've got bad knees and have had back surgery, yet I could ride this bike pain free for hours.

I also have an S with an RS fairing that employs different bars with risers that work well within the RS fairing. That gives a different dynamic that allows you to sit a little more straight up, but even thought it's a decent motorcycle, I still don't enjoy it as much as I do the RS.

That's a beautiful RS you've got there - Never had one myself - My R100 has treated me superbly through the last 8 years - Adding bar risers a few years ago made it much more comfortable - Put on 6000 miles this summer on a cross-country run (Michigan to CA & back) - Had to get a new drive shaft in Omaha - Sent note & pix to BMW Customer Relations asking how that could have been avoided, but have heard nothing in response - I've got an early 80's Daytona fairing covering the front and have been pleased with its capacity and uniqueness - The R100 left us in 1995 - Mine has 62,000 and has received fairly usual replacements (brakes, starter, tires, batteries, plug wires, etc.) - Thinking of having the cylinders/heads glass beaded - Anyway, tough call on your RS - If you can afford it, add another ride next to the RS as was mentioned above - Good luck -

Wish I knew you were going to sell the RS.i would have offered to buy the Corbin rather than the stock replacement. That new seat looks good on my RS though. I can't believe how much more comfortable new foam is versus 1078 foam.
