Pro's and Con's of 2024 Redmond Rally

Good to know, thanks. How far ahead before Redmond did you book the room, and did they charge your card immediately?
I forget exactly but I think we booked probably 6-9 months ahead and no charge until we checked out. Booking early is no risk as you can always cancel.

We booked our room 50 weeks ahead and when we canceled a few weeks before the rally there was no charge.

Yes, that’s usually the case with all the major Hotel chains. The only time you ran into some other policies with the smaller mom and Popp hotels.

I bought a beer at the hotel here in Manchester, NH a few nights ago and it was $16 CDN! The beers and cigars at the cigar bar down the street were cheaper.

I'm sorry, but I've never had a beer that tasted that valuable. I'd frequent my local off-sale and invite some friends over and drink at home. 4 of us could drink for less than that.

Fixed that for ya!

I suspect there was a lot of that happening at Redmond. One might have to buy a single at the beer garden to get whatever “red Solo cup” is being used onsite, but after that you’re under the radar.

I can’t imagine the beer garden being a big success during the county fair at Redmond. None of the central Oregonians I know would be willing to pony up for beer at the prices they were charging. Even beer has a price sensitivity rollover point.

Best,
DeVern

This beer cost me $10 tonight! But I’m at a lodge in a national park. Sometimes you pay the price as a result of where you are. Sure I could go buy a 6 pack and drink in our room and save a few $ but for me it was worth the $10. No one forced me to buy that beer 🙂

I take a different approach toward libation where/when price sensitivity affects the enjoyment.
I pack a flask!
A good rum or vodka cocktail is a suitable option.
I’ll still indulge within the lodge dining, or the rally food truck though.
I don’t pack what they can serve up!

I take a different approach and rarely have more than one drink. :dunno

I've grown to not really like the alcohol buzz very much.

Exactly!! You do what works for you and if you want to avoid costs of dining (drinking) out so be it.

When traveling you often may need to pay the price for convenience or look for less convenient options.

I’m in a National Park Lodge this week where coffee is $4.50, a muffin is $6.50 and soup $9! That’s just the cost these days at these locations. Often we make coffee in the room and stock up at grocery stores to reduce cost.
But that is just life when traveling these days. But there are less expensive options …. You just need to be creative

Ask me about the time we had low funds at the Isle of Man and used the electric kettle in our hotel room and food from the local Safeway to eat all week.

We ate pretty well, too. :ha

A $20 powdered "egg" bowl with "bacon" on Saturday morning? And $9 beers? And $30 knit caps at the MOA Semi Truck Store? And now my cheap-ass Rally Volunteer shirt is starting to come apart after 2-3 washings.

Did the MOA try to do ANYTHING at Redmond 2024, and not gouge the membership?

Has ANYONE seen anyone from MOA Management here on the Forum that has read ANY of these messages, and that has offered an explanation for the way that the MOA mis-handled the Redmond Rally? I don't have time to scroll through all the complaints to see if anyone from MOA has bothered to reply.

I've been to MOA Rallies in Monterey, CA, Spokane, WA, Gillette, WY, the first MT rally, the first Redmond rally, and NONE of those rallies were as disappointing as Redmond 2024.
