Pilot Road 3 or 4 on R1150RT front

I'm running Michelin Pilot Road 3's on my 2004 R1150RT. The new regular Pilot Road 4 does not come in my rear wheel size. The PR 4 GT does but it has a stiffer sidewall for two up heavily loaded riding. I like the compliant ride of the PR3 rear tire as I ride one up. I'll probably go with the PR3 front and back, but I was giving some thought to going to the PR4 front to get the better braking and rain riding. Has anybody gone that route? I've asked Michelin, but they have not gotten back to me yet.

Michelin got back to me and said not to mix the PR 3 and PR 4 because of different compounds and construction.
 
Every manufacturer will tell you not to mix tire types, to protect themselves mostly. That doesn't mean it won't work, in some cases quite well.

Example: I presently have a Pilot Power up front, and a Bridgestone BT014 on the rear (old stock NLA). Works great! The Bridgestone has very stiff sidewalls, which made mounting it a hassle, but I'm very happy with how well the bike handles and sticks.
 
I enjoyed PR's on the front of my RT. 3 or 4, both are great. I switched to Metzeler and doubled my front tire life. Never had any issue with running a different front and rear tire, as long as both were quality tires.
 
For what it's worth, I put PR4GTs on my 2002 RT this year and couldn't be happier with them. They replaced the worn PR3s which I also loved. I have only been riding one-up this year and just got back from a trip to Virginia (from WI) where I had a chance to ride pretty aggressively in some mountain twisties, some of which were still wet from recent rain. I haven't found anything not to like about them and I haven't found any disadvantages compared to the 3. Sounds like you've read the same stuff I did about the advantages in braking and wet weather.

It sounds like we have similar bikes and riding conditions. I was also hesitant about the GT because it initially sounded like it was aimed at two-up riding but when I checked into it my dealer and Michelin both said the GT was the right choice for me. My understanding is that the GT is recommended for the RT due to the bike's weight, even for solo riding.

Hope this helps. They are both great tires so I don't think you can really go wrong.
 
I wonder what that tech-rep would say if the question was - "I have a Metzeler Z8 rear tire and wonder if it would be OK to use a PR3 or PR4 on the front, or should I just get a Metzeler front tire to go with my Z8?"

I have PTR4GT. They still have very flexible sidewalls, just have thicker cord. They ride fine.
