2011 Black Friday Weekend Sale on P3 Lights & Photon Blaster at Skene Design
Now's your chance to get a deal on serious safety lights for your bike.

Skene Design is having a 4 day sale with a $20/system discount on our P3 Lights and Photon Blaster visibility lighting systems.

These would make a great Christmas present for a rider you know, or even yourself!

The sale starts at midnight Thursday and runs through Monday.

Superb Skene Service

Place my Photon Blaster order yesterday, it shipped within the hour. Realized this morning I did not order the turn signal option I wanted. Emailed Jerry Skene, saying what do I do? Checked email an hour later. Found a quick response with an excellent solution to my mistake AND USPS notification that a second package was on its way to me.

It doesn't get any better than this!:clap

Possible legal Issues

Check your local statutes and those of which states or countries you may be riding for some possible legal issues with the flash patterns of these lights. I know Florida would have a problem with them and it could become a criminal issue and not just a civil infraction depending on the scenerio. I really do like how visible these lights make you though.

No problem in any state or province. This was hashed out with the old Brake! lights. If you've heard of recent legislative changes I'd love to see a link.

Well for reasons I'm not computer savy enough to figure out this link will not post the way I want it to. But the statute I am attempting to reference here is Florida State Statute 316.2397(7) with regards to flashing lights. As always, these statutes are subject to interpretation and loopholes yada yada yada ...
My intent is not to cause a stink just trying to assist my fellow motorcyclist. If there is case law or anything else out there finding the opposite I would like to know because these lights would definately attract attention and probably cut down on motorists pulling out in front of us!

With that said F.S.S. 316.405(1) allows for "modulating" headlights during daylight hours.

Skene Rear Flashing Brake Lights

If you read the Florida statute, it pertains to flashing red lights that are visible, directly in front, not from the rear. Here is the specific phrase, copied from the statute:

"any lamp or device thereon showing or displaying a red or blue light visible from directly in front thereof except for certain vehicles hereinafter provided."

Otherwise, Florida LEO's would need to arrest everyone who "pumped the brake pedal," thus, creating a flashing display, when viewed from the rear.

I posed that question to him (the owner) at the National. They are legal in all 50 states. They don't really flash - they sort of flicker almost imperceptibly but the eye/mind notices their existence.

Skene = programmable

you can actually program these little bad boys. they have several modes, including an option for no flashing. if there is ever any issue real or perceived, simply program them not to flash. set the various modes within 10 ( i believe) seconds of having started your bike by using the front brake lever.

one squeeze of the lever = mode A
two squeezes = mode B
etc.
don't recall exactly how many different settings there are but i know one setting disables flashing mode.

the PA statutes regarding this are vague- they appear to address the legality of putting flashing lights similar to the police/ambulance/school bus type on a civilian vehicle.
my local BMW dealer said he wouldn't pass a state inspection on my bike with flashing brake lights! so there is enough confusion surrounding the law (at least here in PA) that some folks STILL don't *get it*.

A state can allow, or disallow, modulating headlights, but its a total waste of their time & effort, as Federal regulations supersede anything they might come up with, and Fed. regs allow for modulating headlights.
I carried a print copy of the Fed laws on it in my KLR's tankbag, as i ran a modulating unit on that bike (stock headlight on that KLR was beyond pitiful, more reminiscent of my 6volt TR-6C than anything else i've ridden before or since).

I believe Paul is 3/4 correct. The "photon blasters" which are really a pair of several yellow LED's pointed forward DO just flicker. They are a conspicuity device to warn approaching vehicles or maybe ones which could enter from a side road. I have them and like them and have absolutely no idea whether they are more or less effective than other other conspicuity lights.

P3's are additional red tail/brake lights and DO flicker when you are not applying the brakes. Maybe a slightly good thing. Their REAL value is when they are programmed to flash before staying on. (Turn on the ignition, hit either brake 5 times for four flashes before the brake light stays on, or hit it 6 times for four rapid/four slower flashes before the brake light stays on. Since you must do this within 5 seconds after turning on the ignition, it works best with the front brake lever.) Turn off the ignition. Then get somebody else to turn it on and pull the brake lever while you see if you really got the result you wanted.

There are other brands of flashing brake lights. I think all are a godsend over the normal brake light when it comes to waking up drivers that are following you. When you come to a stop at a light or sign, if possible, get off the brake. Then hit it again when you see in your mirrors a vehicle approaching you. If he is asleep, maybe you will wake him up.

The people who poo-poo these lighting measures, light colored helmuts, more visible gear, etc. will tell you it doesn't always work. And of course they are right. But if this stuff even works 3/4 of the time, it still increases my odds - because, like most of you other riders and drivers, I am not perfect all the time either.

I have decided to put these lights (Photon Blasters and brake lights) on my Christmas list hoping Santa will come through. I believe these will make us more visible to the motoring public and to me is worth the risk of a citation. However, I don't have a state vehicle inspection to deal with here in Florida either. In my opinion as long as you are not trying to play "Police Man" with the front flashing mode of the photon blasters I think you will be ok as far as the possible criminal aspect of my previous post. I will let you all know if I have any run ins with law enforcement during my travels should I get these lights.

Photon blasters can be programed to be steady or flicker, just by turning ignition key off on a certain amount of times in five seconds

P3 lights can also be programed to nine different modes by turning on ignition switch and activating hand brake a certain amount of times in five seconds

I have both sets of lights, programed to be on steady, P3 lights flash three times when applying brakes then bright, they are additional tail lights otherwise somewhat less bright

High quality product

I have been running the Skeene P3 lights on my R1200RT for the last 93 K miles in and outside of FL and have never been questioned. One of the best farkles I have.
PS: One fellow following me thought my tag was falling off. (lights flicker).

I have had the Skene P3 installed for a year or so and have been followed by police several time with no comment.
Vehicles following me seem to follow less closely and really back off when I hit the brakes. (I have the taillight flicker on and brakes 4 times high and low.)

From the Skene web site:
BRAKE LIGHT PROGRAMMING
4 - steady brake light
5 - brake switches between low and high brightness 4 times *
6 - brake switches rapidly between low and high brightness 4 times,
then more slowly 4 times, then goes steady (default setting)
EMERGENCY FLASHER
7 - medium repeating flash
8 - rapid repeating flash
9 - quad flash
Note: i. emergency flasher is disabled upon application of brake ii. emergency mode is saved on power off. This allows you to switch your motorcycle to parking lights mode and remove the key, without disabling the emergency flasher.

TAIL LIGHT MODES

10 - toggles tail light modulation (flicker) ON/OFF* (default is ON)
12 - toggles high brightness tail light ON/OFF (default is OFF)
(for poor weather conditions such as heavy rain or fog)
