Australian 4 Day Enduro
Motorsports success instead of test ride
The seven time Motocross World Champion Joel Smets was in mission “Down Under” as an official BMW test rider taking part in the Australian 4 Day Enduro which is the Australian counterpart of the Sixdays. With a standard G 450 X, only upgraded by an Acrapovic exhaust system, he did more than well scoring a sensational 6th overall result amongst 300 competitors.

Smets did not have a single technical problem during the four days of riding. On day 4 he found himself in a fantastic 9th overall position before the final motocross test. With no penalties on his hands he was placed only just behind the top stars of the scene. In the last special test the “Flemish Lion” gave everything and was fighting for second position with Anthony Roberts. In the end he had to give in and rode over the finish line in third position where he was received by the cheers of the crowd. Thanks to this third place he climbed up by three positions in the general ranking.

Joel Smets was the absolute popular figure at the 4 Day Enduro – in the end a 4 day race event planned for testing turned into a great motorsports success.

Heidfeld brings Formula One to BMW Plant in Munich.
04-23-2008 Press Release

Fast work at the factory.

Theissen: “Support from within the company really helps us.”

Munich, 23rd April 2008. The assembly lines came to a standstill and the workforce gathered in anticipation in front of the production halls. Outside, Nick Heidfeld roared his way around BMW’s Munich plant in his Formula One car. The BMW Sauber F1 Team put on Wednesday’s spectacular driving demonstration to thank the employees at the plant for their support in its Formula One campaign. “It was long overdue and a really great event,” said BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen. “A lot of people have had their fingers crossed for us and been with us all the way during the development phase of the new team, so they should also share in our recent success.” Heidfeld, lying second in the F1 drivers’ standings after three races of the season, added: “It is nice to give the workforce something back.”

Heidfeld was not the only driver performing "donuts", which eventually cost a front wing, watched by over 5000 employees four days ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Touring car driver J?Ârg M??ller was also out and about at the plant with his BMW 320si WTCC. David Mengesdorf rounded off the BMW Motorsport line-up with a demo run in the Formula BMW junior racing car.

“We’re well aware that a lot of people in the various departments are keenly following our fortunes and have bets on our results. However, it is not possible to involve the workforce properly at the circuits, so we had to come up with something special instead,” explained Theissen. “It is wonderful to see the BMW employees getting behind the sport. Support from within the company really helps us and gives us extra incentives. If we continue to pull together in this way then we will be well set to achieve that maiden GP victory we have set our sights on for 2008.”

Heidfeld started the day with a tour through the production halls. “The scale of the machinery is impressive, but the euphoric reception I was given by the workforce was even more amazing,” said the German. “I lost track of how many hands I was shaking.”

Due to flexible break times, production at the plant was halted from 11.15 to 12.30 hrs to give the workers the opportunity to watch the driving demonstrations and collect autographs. After a break for lunch, Heidfeld spent a further hour in another area of the production facility. “And even then we barely had enough time,” he said. “There were still hundreds of people I would like to have talked to.”

Heidfeld and Mengesdorf will set off later today for Barcelona to prepare for the Formula One GP and the start of the Formula BMW Europe season respectively. M??ller, meanwhile, will have to wait until 18th May for his next World Touring Car Championship race in Valencia. “I am sure that we will enjoy even greater support in the future,” he concluded.

BMW GROUP DESIGN TALK VILLA ERBA 2008: High calibre specialists to attend panel discussion within the framework of the Concorso d'Eleganza at Lake Como.
04/24/2008

Munich / Como. "Icon: Show & Tell" is this year's theme of the "BMW Group
Design Talk Villa Erba 08" being held at Lake Como (Sunday, April 27, 2008,
commencing 10:30 a.m.). For the sixth time, the BMW Group will instigate this
famous event within the framework of the Concorso d'Eleganza at the Villa
Antica, to which international journalists and exclusive VIP guests have been
invited. The design talk will once again be hosted by Carl G. Magnusson, long
standing Executive Vice President and Chief Designer of Knoll Design, New
York.

Whereas the 2007 discussion, which was titled "Sketch the dream!",
focussed on the creative process from the initial design to the finished item, this
year's discussion will concentrate on the origin, significance and charisma of
icons. Each panel member will present a design icon from a different area of
expertise, such as the Vernon Panton Chair, the iPod, the Herm?¿s Kelly Bag or
the BMW M1. Moreover, the M1 BMW Art Car by Andy Warhol can be seen at
the rotunda of the Villa Erba.

Once again, internationally renowned designers and design experts will
participate in the panel discussion. For 2008, BMW was able to procure the
following guests:

Christopher E. Bangle, Director Design BMW Group, Munich
Stefan Diez, Product designer, Munich
Fabrizio Giugiaro, Styling director of Italdesign Giugiaro, Turin
Maira Kalman, Illustrator and author, New York
Fritz Un??tzer, Owner of fashion label & shoe manufactory of the same name
Cornel Windlin, Graphic designer and art director, Zurich

For 78 years now the Concorso d'Eleganza at the Villa d'Este has been one of
the most exclusive events in bringing together fans and connoisseurs of historic
automobiles and collectors' items from all over the world in a unique ambience at
Lake Como. This year it will take place from Friday, April 25 to Sunday 27.
