i'm seriously considering getting a mac for my next computer at work. i've had it with PCs in general. if i do i will use entourage instead of outlook. does anyone else have experience with being the only entourage user like this? any issues? problems? comparisons to outlook?

thanks!

Once You Mac You Don't Look Bac!

I grew frustrated with Windows and switched too Mac as a result. I have Office and Entourage loaded on the Mac. I use Safari instead on IE. I connect to my work network via Citrix and am able to access all my work apps easily and without issue. I then decided to skip Entourage and instead take advantage of the integration that iCal and AddressBook and iMail offer. I am very pleased. At work I still have a Windows laptop but at home I am on MacBook Pro and not looking back. Good luck with your research!

Next you will say you are trading in your BMW for a Subaru.

Depending on your company's network and if they run their own email server, the Entourage may not be compatible with it. Where I work, we support a very large organization that is a Windows/Microsoft shop. Entourage will not work with their Exchange servers, Outlook is the only one they allow in. They do have a webmail client based on Outlook that they have setup for the Mac users, but it does not have all the functionality of Outlook.

On the other hand the company that actually pays me uses Lotus Notes and now that is a royal PITA to work with. Nothing else will connect to the Lotus server, not even a webmail client. Up until the last "upgrade" to our laptops and PCs, they allowed us to use MS Office or Open Office. Now they are making us use Lotus Symphony. Almost makes me want to quit.

Get the Mac. If there are corporate support issues, you can run whatever flavor of Windows you like under Bootcamp, Parallels, or VMWare Fusion. Best of both worlds.

See if your IT dept offfers terminal server access and just use Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection app on your mac.

buy your IT dudes coffee, chill with them, they will prob think you are awesome

this stuff isn't a huge integration deal.

Nah,
Mac = BMW...
PC = Harley...

hey now, i have a subaru *and* a bmw. :p

i also have a mac on my pc network at the home office.

it's transparent.

the only issue i had was sharing files with PC when there was an auto-update to windows a few months ago. i ultimately had to move all files i wanted to share on the PC to the public folder, as some security thing happened that kept the mac from seeing the documents folder.

I love the Apple ads that say they just work! Go visit the discussion groups (Apple>Support>Discussion) and you'll see the myriad problems Apple users have to contend with, and the lack of corporate response to those problems. The grass isn't always greener! I have a Mac Book Air which so far is problem free, but many people are experiencing substantial overheating problems and WiFi connection problems.

My Subaru(s) all have boxers and since the latest is our 6th Subaru, be careful what you say; i speakin de dutch when I say they run circles around anything else on pavement and especially in the snow!:brad

I am a PC person tried and true and have a two solutions for PC's that give you trouble; shut it off, hard boot the sucker! Turn it back on!

2. Never, never look at Porno on line!

So for those of you with trouble, look within for the problem...:thumb

Seriously though, I don't know the first thing about MAc, and at my age, I am reluctant to learn....

Most issues that "pop up" with a PC I have either learned to cope, or can find a way to fix. Mac's scare me having to learn new ways to handle what my f keys now do from memory!

ps when will this forum get a working spell check?

i have to be bi-platform... ALL my clients are PC-based.

the most frustrating thing is what i call contrary conventions...

if it's on the right with windows (say, for closing, minimizing and maximizing a window) it will be on the left with a mac.

if you double-click a window bar on the mac, it goes down to the doc (toolbar). doing the same on a pc window maximizes.

there are a million little details like that, and they make it very hard to go back and forth between the two machines.

indeed.

they don't "just work"

just try bluetoothing e-mail attachments (or any other files) from your iPhone to the Mac. :burnout

That's an iphone problem. File transfers between Mac and Treo via bluetooth just work.

Ditto for me. When most of my peripherals would not work with Vista, I switched to a Macbook Pro. I am running Windows XP in a virtual machine using VMWare Fusion, solely for the use of my peripherals (GPS, MP3, Palm, Skycaddie) and it works perfectly. I cannot tell that I am not on a PC when I use the virtual machine, but I definitely prefer Leopard for most new applications. Safari is great......I almost never use the internet through IE anymore. The biggest PITA is when I start the virtual machine and have to wait while XP, virus software, and spyware all update, then insist that I scan NOW! Mac is so nice.:thumb

I started in the 80s with the very first Mac 512Ke, followed by many other models, but after Steve Jobs left the firm, I saw Apple loosing ground. I even ran Mac in the Marketing Department for a company that made graphics cards for the PC. We had to keep it quite to the outside world, but over time, with Apple loosing on the technical front, I shifted to the PC and had been using them for close to 10 years. XP grew, and become more and more bloated. Virus attached it relentlessly and the system is now seen by many as one of the most vulnerable to attacks on the market. It got to be where it was more trouble than it was worth. I still can't believe how much energy is spent worldwide keeping that system just running.

About a year ago, I finally switched. What a breath of fresh air. No virus attacks, no spyware, just a system that works - just like the iPod and iTunes. Everything is so well thought out and seamless.

I finally realized that there have been two times where I really enjoyed computing. THey were when I bought my first Macs, and now. Everything in between was just running a computer.

If you make the move, get a copy of the newest release of Office for the Mac. I would stick with Apple Mail however if you can. Microsoft will try to lock you into Entourage (Outlook for Mac).

The recent iPhones 3G, and the updates to the iPhone, now make it possible to integrate the iPhone, Calendar and Address Book to Microsoft Exchange seamlessly. All of this technology is just around the corner and should be incorporated in the next release update to the OS/X.

To keep updated on what's coming, check out www.appleinsider.com and www.macrumors.com/

Good luck. You'll LOVE it.

Macintosh- It's a cult!!.

In reference to the problems experienced with macs in some of the above responses I and my company are exclusively Mac and always have been. Yes, sometimes there are issues with Hardware/Software etc. But in my experience the incidence of problems are minute in comparison to some of the issues with PC's. We have always gotten satisfaction through either Apple support or troubleshooting ourselves through the discussion groups at apple.com. 99% of the issues users have with their equipment is resolved usually in the discussion groups just by asking a question and is usually due to their inexperience with computers in general.. Mail, calendar and safari are not perfect but pretty close to it.. True, plug and play, out of the box and completely set up within a couple minutes!

No virus's, no virus protection. None of that scanning every file each time you start up..

I haven't owned a PC or since I swapped a Zeos XT circa 1989 for a Mac Classic. All of the companies that I've worked for as well as my own business have been Mac based.

As both Snoone and Pparker have opined, no viruses, no special virus protection and an elegant system that truly works.
