K75 'Wheeping'/ Whining Sound - Fuel Pump?

Hi folks!

First post here...Anyways, I have a 1990 K75S (the bike has a very interesting history - at least what I know of it as it was sold to me as a '94....sigh) that I've had for the last 5 years and have been enjoying it all along. Last year I noticed that once the bime has warmed up and I'd been riding it for at least a short while, I would notice a 'wheeping' sound coming from the bike. Wheeping is the best I can do to describe the high pitched whine/wheep I hear.

After unsuccessfully trying to nail down the source of the sound, my best guess right now is that it is coming from around the fuel tank/just under the tank. Does this sound likely the pump is the culprit? Is the sound indicative of needing to replace the pump, or is it just a quirk of the K75? The bike has low miles (supposedly) - less 25k, most of which I've put on it.

So, in summary, once the bike warms up and particularly on warmer days (like over 70 degrees F), I'll notice the wheeping sound from the area of the fuel tank when I'm stopped at a light, or moving slowly in 1st like in a parking lot or some such - it's almost impossible to notice once I'm moving at road speeds with gear on.

Let me know what you guys (and gals!) think. I didn't get a ton of riding in last year and have just started riding a bit more this year - the sound doesn't seem to be a major issue, but anything out of the norm I like to have an understanding of (and fix before it becomes a more costly issue - or a safety issue!).

Thanks!

Aaron

They're called K-whiners for a reason. It's the sound the alternator makes.
You can check the fuel pump by opening the tank when the noise is occuring. You can hear the pump readily if it is noisy. If the tank is lower on fuel, the pump will be louder.
When is the last time you changed the fuel filter? When the filter gets clogged it increases the load on the pump and makes it louder. There is a pressure relief on the pump that is really loud if the filter is that clogged.

If the whining gets noticeably lounder when the fuel is low then it's definitely the fuel pump---normal sound for K75s...

Thanks guys - I'll get a new fuel filter as it's been a couple years. And I'll open the gas when I notice it to see if that tells me more. I didn't think it was a huge deal, just different then it had been for the first couple years I'd been riding it. I won't worry too much more about it then!

Thanks!

Aaron
