Introduction and 1150R Red Triangle Warning Light

Greetings...

I've been a member on and off over the years, oddly enough, I think this is my first post. I refurbished a 74 R75/6 and also had a 2004 R1100S - both of which I wish I had not sold. To correct this, last fall I picked up a 2004 R1150R with 58K on it on the cheap. It was very well cared for and absolutely loving my third BMW.

So yeah, the red triangle warning light with the exclamation point. Please know I did a search and read through some ten pages before seeking help. It is rapidly flashing, very dimly, and it is only this light (not the brake failure or ABS warning). It starts flashing after a brief pause with ignition on, then running. I HAVE ruled out the taillight - connections are good, bent the tabs up a little, both filaments operating as they should. I even tried an LED just for the heckuvit. Brake fluid levels for front and rear master cylinders are fine and clean.

This bike had ABS - the previous owner explained the control unit went out and like many have done, had it defeated, at the dealership. I see the new split valve up front and interestingly, the control unit is still under the tank. I did a few things over the winter so it is difficult to pin down what may or may not be causing the light.

New Battery - I load tested the existing battery, which showed weak. I replaced it with a properly commissioned Yuasa. I get 14V at idle and 12.7 static.

Rear Brakes - I installed new pads, the fronts were fine.

Headlight - tried a higher performance PIAA, which I swapped back and forth with the old to rule that out. I noted the parking light socket was broken, replaced, working now.

License Plate Light - it wasn't working so fixed that as well.

New tires front and back - not seeing how it could affect but just noting anyway.

Before I tear it completely down again - fluid in the ABS control unit? Would that matter if it was defeated? And how is it checked?

Anything else I should be checking? The brakes, I should also note, feel great.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for any guidance here!

-Robert

Nice bike Robert. I've got a 2005 r1150r and I often see that light on but it goes away eventually. No matter what I did, it didn't seem to affect when that light went on or off. I think your warning light may be on because the brake fluid in your underseat controller/pump is low. That's if the sensors are connected. Or, if the controller and sensors are disconnected, the light may be on because the computer is expecting a signal. My abs is still enabled and still works. I'm hoping the light will stay off when I bleed the brakes -- those dang servos make replacing the brake fluid a major pain in the rear.
I found this thread on the BMW Sport Touring forum helpful.

Good hunting!
