Got to bring my bike home after a rather lengthy debacle with the dealer trying to complete the option sheet in my order form from August 15th, by installing the 'aux lights' on my '26 R1300RT when they finally arrived from Germany. I live a 1+15hr drive each way from the only dealer in my part of the country. They are good people trying to do the best for their clientele, in my opinion, however following a 6hr 'wait' for the 1st attempt to install the lights I was informed that the tech, ( who was delayed starting on my bike by a transient 'emergency', rider from another country who was stranded with a mechanical...), after removing all panels necessary to access the wiring harness, etc, and installing one of the lights, he discovered that the second light had a cracked lens. He decided to put the bike back to 'serviceable mode' in order for me to be able to drive home and wait for the replacement lens/light to arrive from Germany. Second trip...this time after only 3hrs I was informed by the service manager that the tech had been on the phone with BMW Canada for some time, trying to source help with the fact that the connectors that came with the light assembly didn't match up with the supposed 'correct' connections on the bikes wiring harness. Bike back together and home again to wait for the 'come back' call. Third time and this time I brought back up transportation in the form of my wife whom I traded her patience for a chance for her to go 'shoe shopping' for 4hrs, while I waited at the dealership as the tech, again on the phone with BMW Can...attempted to gleam some gem of knowledge regarding how to 'code the software' to enlighten the TFT screen as to the presence of the newly installed auxiliary lights. After some time, they were able to have the 'aux light' selection come up on the screen...and indicate 'ON" when selected...BUT, they were in fact, NOT on. I left the bike there and went home. That was 16 days ago. Brought the bike home yesterday, shining 3 bright lights towards all potential 'left turners', LOL.
Oh, and as an added bonus to the wealth of knowledge gleaned from this episode, the 'heated drivers seat' that I had requested, and was assured was not a problem since it was available and the tech assured us that the connector was there, so its 'plug and play', was to have been installed at the same time as the lights, was not going to be possible since there was NO SOFTWARE available on the TFT to provide control of the heating for the seat. Why? Because the seat wasn't an 'order option', just a heated driver seat ordered through the parts dept. The factory wiring loom is standard and so the connector was there, but the software is missing. The service manager assured me that if there was ever a time when BMW Canada came up with a software update to the heated seat to actually... 'heat', he would be sure to let me know.
So....bottom line....pay particular attention to what options you choose when ordering your new bike. Especially for very new models. Best to pick a bike the dealer has in stock with everything you want ALREADY INSTALLED on the bike...I missed some of the best fall riding weather that I have seen in years. And at 78...well, I was almost ready to buy another bike just to get OUT, LOL.
