I assume SL supercedes SJ on motorcycle oil?

SL supercedes SJ but it doesn't provide the ZDDP protection you need. You should stick with something labeled SF/SG. You can see my article in the March 2013 Owners News...oil tests for a range of oils. Valvoline Mobile VR1 has been shown to work well. I've been using Golden Spectro 20w50...I can't seem to find it locally so I have to order it in advance of an oil change.

"Supercedes" is a bit of a misnomer in this case - even some of the folks at your local FLAPS don't about the reduction in ZDDP. Get into this website's magazine archives (ref Kurt's note above; Homepage\Owners News\Magazine Archives) and take your pick...

If you're running a 40-50 year old motorcycle, it's time to face the reality modern products are not designed for you, and you require extra effort to find suitable products.

Your BMW dealer has or can get for you an Advantec oil for your Airhead.

It appears also Castrol is marketing oil for "classics."

Interesting, Kent. Back when I was testing oils, another member saw that Porsche was selling a classic oil 20w50 in a can. That member sent a sample off to be tested. Came back OK but there were ferrous particles in the testing results, clearly from the container. Small amounts for sure but who would want "extras" in your oil? :)
