Hi from San Francisco, CA

I've had lots of bikes in the past (Triumph, Ducati, Aprilia, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha...geez, I've pretty much had them all except a Honda, and I have my eye on a Grom!). Mostly old (I still have my 2000 Triumph Sprint ST) and many were...er...unreliable.

Then a friend told me "Stop buying 'those' bikes - buy a BMW and you'll never go back". So I did :)

I bought a 2008 (still old-ish!) K1200GT with ~50K miles on it. The lady I bought it from kept it IMMACULATE, as she did her garage and Porsche, so I figured it was a good sign.

So far I love it except the clutch squeak (which everyone knows about) and the fact that I'm in danger of getting stopped by the CHP - it's so easy to find yourself suddenly in the 90's or even triple-digit speeds without meaning to... Also the top-case is a little small for my regular 2-day-trip duffel bag, so one of these days I'm gonna get a 49L version...

I've taken multiple trips to Tahoe, the Oregon border and down to Santa Barbara. So far so good! No breakdowns (I wish I could say the same about the other bikes)!

Great intro!
Welcome to the forum!
Good luck with the bike. Sounds like (and looks like) a good one.

Hola Rory on the Left coast from the Tenn River valley.

Nothin wrong with a "good" used Beemer. Hope you'll enjoy many miles & smiles. Most of mine/ours have had a previous owner [not counting my first BMW bought new in 1975]. Welcome to the MOA Forum - Glad U listened to your friend to find a BMW that suits your riding style. Too bad U likely missed out on the National Rally in Redmond, OR in June. You'll have much farther to ride next June if you're thinking of attending the 52nd MOA Rally in Lebanon, TN! :brow Ducats available online NOW!
Might as well start documenting your BMW mileage if you're gonna get into the Long-Distance Touring business. Since 1975, I'm > 400K mi & Mrs-HSV is > 200K currently... :thumb

Well with the other bikes over the years, I'm currently at about 150K miles on a bike - only 5K so far on the Beemer, but I'm liking what I feel.

Welcome roryhewitt! Congrats on the new (to you) bike. Pics are encouraged so all can revel in its splendor.

Here you go - pics of my first 'big' ride on the Beemer - 4 days from San Francisco over the Sierras to Las Vegas and back, via Death Valley. Only 117° this trip...

Sounds like we have similar tastes. I've had 3 Triumphs, My Sprint ST was my favorite bike. Rented a Speed Triple when we went to the Isle of Man TT in 2017! Highly recommended for one's bucket list before you turn 65, since apparently insurance is unavailable to rent after that. I'm new here, too, but look forward to meeting the rest of the folks. See ya round.
