Heli Coil size for valve cover bolt

R1100RT

R1100 RT
I would also like to know what size Heli Coil I will need to repair the threads in the #6 hexbolt on the valve covers of a 1998 R 1100 RT. Looks like I overtightened one of the bolts. Figured I could drill out and repair the threads with a proper sized Heli Coil repair kit.

I bought a helicoil kit for 6mmx1 thread. 6mmX1.5 is available but too coarse.
The kit included a drill bit, threading tap and an inserter for the coil. My kit had very skimpy instructions so I found better instructions on the web. (don't remember the site)
Since you are drilling into a hole you will likely have no trouble keeping the drill straight and the tap is pretty easy to use.
Hope this will help. :burnout

One more helicoil tip!

Do break off the little tab until you are sure the coil is in correctly, in aluminum in particular, they have a tendency to skip a thread if you push too hard installing one. You can not screw one out, but you can use needle nose and grab the tab and pull one out. If you break the tab,m then it becomes much harder and you need a sharp pic.

Another tip run the tap in and out several times until you can easily turn the tap with only light pressure with your fingers.
It will make inserting the helicoil much easier...

Thanks for the answers, gentlemen.
I have myself a metric 6 x 1 heli coil kit that should do the fix.

Sincerely,
Dean
