I’ve been working on my new to me 2010 R1200GS – and decided to make a headlight guard. I had a lexan clear protector on my R1150GS so decided to go that way again.
I purchased some Lexan ($4.79 10”x10” square) at Lowes, along with duolock 3M fastener tape ($4.39 at Ace Hardware) – like Velcro but thicker and cleanable (you can get mud and dirt out with a brush). Using some copy paper I made a template, transferred that to the lexan sheet (1/4” Thick, 10”x10” sheet).
Cutting of the material was done with a 18.5 tooth/inch jigsaw, moving fast enough to prevent burning the material but slowly to create smooth curves. After cutting, the protective film was removed, the 3M Duolock cut to convenient shapes and applied. After a couple of test fits, it seems to work very well and is as stable as my previous purchased solution.
The project took me about an hour start to finish and cost just under $10. I did not polish the edges, as I’m more in the prototype phase. Already have an order from a friend!
