Ahhh. A breath of straight dope. I was sure that this was just good old coax but all the urban theories......I can't tell if it's teflon, looks like polyethylene. Does it melt from heat of the soldering iron?

My original Roady had a large antenna, with a 4 conductor cable. With the advent of the RoadyII, they went to a two conductor coax.

According to the antenna repair how-to, yes, you need to be careful of melting the center insulation.

I don't think the cable would do well with a F connector, the cable is ~ 3/16th " thick.

I see that. It looks like the cable is normally 50 ohm and a size about like RG174 and they use 50 ohm SMB connectors. The cable extensions, some of them, convert the SMB to F connectors while transforming the impedance to 75 ohms and use RG6 coax for the extension cable. RG6 because it's cheap since it's being used for cable tv everywhere. Also they sometimes include an amplifier as well for long cable runs like a hundred feet, going with 75 ohms everywhere converting the impedance and connector type at the xm antenna and down at the xm receiver. Sirius is the same, looks like.
