Hello all! Not new to riding but was looking for a mill that had more power and still be a good all-rounder, and I was led to a a 2009 R 1200 GS with just 13,600 miles on the clock at the BMW dealer. Apparently was just traded in by a “regular buyer who acquires new BMW bikes at least once a year” and was on a first-name basis with the staff. In brief, this example was exceptionally well maintained. He even had stickers with TP settings F and R on the fork/swingarm!

Was a little nervous about acquiring this bike at first given I’d never bought a used bike “this old,” but after researching it appears this particular example is the last airhead and is considered to be one of the better GS models to have. I liked it because it has none of that electronic overkill on it.

Definitely has a character all its own, and I’m just starting to see why folks who start with this marque usually stay with it. Very comfortable with stock seat and geometry, well balanced, and effortless power. Sounds like a tank with its “kerthunk” when I change gears, but I dig it!

Anyhoo, looking forward to adding many more miles to my new-to-me mill and learning about these machines from y’all. Thanks for reading!

Welcome to the club, A-guy, from down south along the Tennessee River!

If I had to guess, I'd say you got yourself a fine, nearly new workhorse of a Motorrad machine. Now find a local MOA Chapter and connect with them for some riding opportunities. I usually lead the MOAL on a 2nd Saturday Ride-2-Eat {just not in June when we're headed to the MOA International Rally}.

If U need to dust off some rusty off-road skills, find some training maybe online and then use a Paul-B Training stipend to help pay for your refresher!

Enjoy your GS safely this summer; wave as U go by... 👋

Happy Trails whenever U can!

Congratulations on your acquisition. I am fond of the hexhead 1200 myself but it's not really an airhead. The airhead era ended with the 1996 production year. They did have a long run of 28 years in a variety of models.

Thanks for correcting me on what generation bike I have.
