Broken pot metal latch on system cases

Love living and riding!
Hi everyone,

I've rejoined BMWMOA again and am in need of some help. My bike tipped over downtown Portsmouth (don't ask) and cracked my right mirror shell and the right bag popped off. This is all as you are sitting on the bike.

So when I got the bike back up the bag fell off and when I looked at it the bag was still closed and locked as it should be. Only the pot metal flange that grabs hold of the rail on the bike was broken off.

Has there been or is there a way to fix this mess? I hate to spend the $200 to get a part and then have to dink with getting it put on correctly.

Any help would be appreciated.

PS. I bought two mirrors from the link below for $240 all painted and everything. Except they are coming from Hong Kong so I hope they arrive safe! I'll let you know. :type

I believe (but haven't tried) that latch assemble can be changed out. Those pot metal latches have a nasty habit of occasionally breaking while you're going down the road and then the bag can take wings and fly away. I lost the right bag off my K12RS once just that way. Never even noticed it until a hundred miles down the road when I stopped for gas. :cry

The entire multi-purpose box which includes the broken latch assembly can be changed out, but that is the $200 route. Drilling out the old rivets is the hardest part of the job. You may be better off to watch for a used case on e-bay or in the flea market. I was lucky enough to find someone with a multi-purpose box with a broken handle and a good latch. I was able to mix and match parts to build one good multi-purpose box. This was a much more tedious route, but it was dirt cheap.

Thank you for the responses. I've looked for both the used multi-purpose and bag but haven't found any yet but have only been looking for a week. If anyone finds a bag or multi I'd appreciate a e-mail back.

I hope to do some good riding this year but we've had No snow to speak of in NH and wondering if summer is going to get rained out!

try putting a wanted ad in the flea market. here, advrider, ibmr...

I scored great deals on the broken multi-box and a lid that way.

If you find yourself trying to reconstruct a multi-box and need some parts, let me know; I saved the scraps.

The latch can be removed from the mechanism and can be aluminium welded if you have the broken piece and know a good welder. It is a small part to weld.

It easier to replace the whole mechanism. Either way, the pop rivets must be drilled out and the holes cleaned.

As far as rivets go, I choose to thread the rivet holes 10-32 unf and use 10-32 x 1/2" ss screws instead. The screws are accompanied by a #10 x 1/16 nylon washer for water sealing. You can forgo the nylon washers if you use silicone sealer.
The screws are less than $2 and the latch assembly can be easily removed/serviced anytime
