Broken ABS Pin on R1150RT – Is Connector Repair Possible?

Hi all,

I recently ran into an issue with the ABS unit on my BMW R1150RT. As seen in the attached photo, there is a multi-pin connector on the ABS module where the wiring harness plugs in. During some troubleshooting, I accidentally bent two of the pins, which caused an ABS fault that took quite a while to diagnose.

Luckily, I managed to carefully straighten them out, and everything is now working perfectly again.

However, my question is: What if one of those pins had snapped off completely?

Is it possible to replace or repair the connector on the ABS module itself, or would that require a full module replacement?

Any insight from someone who’s dealt with this kind of issue would be greatly appreciated.

I think you lucked out on this. I usually put a little dielectric grease on connector halves in reassembly to help prevent bending any of the pins.

When I did the ABS-ectomy on my 2003, I removed the electronics module from the ABS module body and kept it plugged in to the bike's wiring to operate the tail and brake lights. So I got a peek into the insides of it. That connector is soldered directly to the printed circuit board. If you could find a source for the connector and you have a little skill with a soldering iron, it should be possible to replace it. It might be easier to find a non-working iABS module for sale and swap out the electronics. From what I've read, the majority of module failures are not in the electronics.
 
Not on bikes, but at work - it was always a Major PITA, very time-consuming, and good luck keeping the pins properly aligned in all 3 axes plus rotation. Much better to R&R the entire connector if you can find one, maybe from an already-dead module bought cheap.
