BMW R80 1984 rear brake light switch - 61 31 1 459 747

Does anyone have pictures of bmw 61 31 1 459 747 switch installed in a r80?
My bike is missing the switch and dont know how to install and dont have information online regarding this. Thank you
 
Welcome to the forum! I did a search on RealOEM with that part number but don't see an '84 R80 that it was used on. But it's probably similar to other R80 bikes. Anyway, here's a picture from the fiche...probably doesn't help a lot for what you need. #29 in the image.


This is a similar view for the '84 R80 rear brake. All I see is #26 for the switch:

 
Thats it, but how to install it?
In the bike i can see the stopper for the pedal brake, diferent from the part 61 31 1 353 684, so i assume the correct is 61 31 1 459 747.
But didnt find any photo online with this switch installed.
 
It's been SO many years, so I may be full of (beans), but is this what you have? (Picture from EME; they show it as being for various bikes from 1986 to 2006)

As I recall, there are two tiny holes on a little bracket down at the "inboard" side of the footpeg, and the switch bolts on there.

Cant find the place. Is the actual footpeg that actuates this switch when pressed?
 
No, it's the inboard rear of the brake lever (I think...). Look under and inside; I seem to recall the "outside" of the area was a black metal triangular shape, near the forward end of the driveshaft housing....

I'm assuming (yes we all know what that means) that you have a mechanically-activated drum brake back there; if you have anything hydraulic, it'll be different (insert "grrr" here).

So... Is the picture in post 5 what you have, And what actually belongs there?
If it looks like item 26 in Kurt's second Real OEM link, that's a different animal and of course mounts differently.

I think someone got ambitious with a Sawzall 😲

Here’s the same general area on my 1973 R 60/5, mechanical rear drum brake…

and on my 1978 R 100RS, hydraulic rear disc brake…

That triangular structure mounts the rear brake pedal pivot under the bottom/front; there is a mounting point for rear foot pegs on the side/ mid-length; at the far bottom/rear turn-down, the silencers mount. (Yeah, yeah… that shiny object just in the top of the picture is the right Luftmeister Auxiliary Fuel Tank; all topped off: 9.25 gallons onboard 😎)

The apprentice Sawzall operator appears to have sawn off most of it along the RED LINE I super- imposed on your picture…

… drilled a hole (circled) to mount a “field fabricated” stop for the rear brake pedal, too. While said E.P.O. had the drill motor out, drilled another hole for aftermarket rear foot peg (X) ! Brother, that ain’t factory 🫣

It’s no wonder you can’t find a location for the rear brake stop light switch… it’s in the “skip”, as they say in the UK !

I also noticed the diagonal strap (field fabricated) running from under the front of the rear brake rod, to about where it might be attaching to the silencer as, the OEM mounting point is in the “skip” !

… and looking closer: I’m pretty sure that your bike had the right angle structure to support the rear brake switch/rear brake pedal stop !

The GREEN outline was field fabricated for a rear brake pedal stop. The RED outline just barely shows evidence where that right angle mounting structure for the rear brake switch was… Sawzall “chew” marks, too !

… pssst, wanna see some dirty pictures 🫢

I was able to stuff my iPad into the rear wheel, driveshaft, suspension strut area on the R 60/5 for a picture…

Apologies for not dusting the area first. What you see is: rear brake rod running forward to the rear brake pedal “U” coupling; above that is the rear brake switch, mounted on the right angle structure welded to the interior of the right support triangle. You can see the “two little screws” that secure the rear brake switch to the bracket.

Also visible is the forged alloy rear brake pedal, rising from the lower part of the picture, to meet at the “U” coupling of the rear brake rod.
The driveshaft and front accordion bellows is just visible, on the left side of the picture.

Inside the right support triangle, there is a heavy washer welded in; originally, like on the R 60/5, the rear foot pegs simply mounted in the simple exterior drilled hole and, it was reinforced on the interior by that heavy washer.

Later production bikes gained the exterior segmented washer, so the also segmented rear foot pegs would stay in place after being oriented, like on the R 100RS.

By comparing this image with the image in Post #14, you can see what’s missing… grrrrrrrr

Ok, I gotta go out in the garage and figure out how to get my iPad outta the rear wheel, driveshaft, suspension strut area 🤣

… can you say: CAFE’D 🏍️

Before you go blind with rage, at the very edge of the picture, note where the Sawzall “chewed” on the driveshaft housing while removing the rear brake switch mount !

He did it just because of the exaust 😳
Theres some many other options..
thank you all… i need to think about this, maybe i can still fabricate a metal bracket to support the switch
