Blue Ridge Parkway condition and closure on in upper NC and Back of the Dragon in Va.

A group of us took a little ride on the Parkway today from near where Rt 16 crosses it (near West Jefferson, NC) to Meadows of Dan, Va. A good section of the Parkway is closed from around mile 234 to just north of Sparta, NC. The detour is a nice ride with better road conditions that the roads on the Parkway. The potholes and broken pavement were terrible when we got back on the Parkway just North of Sparta with large patches of broken and missing pavement along with numerous potholes. The road got gradually better until the Virginia line. The Virginia portion had a few bad places but was much better. None of the potholes or other defects have been repaired and some of them are large and/or deep. We rode 235 miles of backroads today and the Parkway was by far the worse encountered. It might be a good idea to wait until repairs have been made. The did have "Rough Road" signs posted occasionally.

We rode the "Back of the Dragon" from Marion to Tazewell last week and there was not a pothole seen on the entire 32 miles. It is early with little gravel on the road because the horse and cattle trailers have not been on it to kick the gravel out onto the road. The highway department were cleaning ditches and taking down some of the steep banks on the middle mountain.
