I don’t know if it’s different elsewhere, but indigent defense (court appointed/public defender) is vastly overworked and underfunded. Burnout rates are high. Even if your lawyer tries to do their best, they are vastly inferior to what the prosecution has.

Mass just approved/passed the next fiscal budget without, or so it seems, trying to remedy this situation.

I do not know of a single home inspector retained to inspect a 4th floor condo who would or could discover a structural defect of misplaced reinforcement and substandard concrete
I've done a lot of concrete inspection on structures, not flat work.
I'm surprised if someone was not on site to check steel placement, take slump tests and make cylinders to check concrete strength.
Plus someone had to approve the concrete mix ahead of time.

Yes, indeed something was messed up at the time of construction. But my comment was about a "home inspection" ten or twenty or thirty years later, before it was discovered during a roof repair and the building was condemned.

Over 100 people were illegally riding bicycles, dirt bikes, and motorized scooters through the streets of Boston on Saturday afternoon, according to Massachusetts State Police.

Sounds like (1), ONE INDIVIDUAL was apprehended.

This activities can be very dangerous as the hooligans, seeing and taking advantage of the “terror” that they are inflicting on motorists turns into a “my car is bigger than your bike” incident.

Hundreds may have been exposed to rabies at bat-infested cabins in Grand Teton National Park. Health officials are working to alert hundreds of people in dozens of states and several countries who may have been exposed to rabies in bat-infested cabins in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park over the past few months.

Health officials are working to alert hundreds of people in dozens of states and several countries who may have been exposed to rabies in bat-infested cabins in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park over the past few months.

As of Friday, none of the bats found in some of the eight linked cabins at Jackson Lake Lodge had tested positive for rabies.

But the handful of dead bats found and sent to the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory in Laramie for testing were probably only a small sample of the likely dozens that colonized the attic above the row of cabins, Wyoming State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist said.

Other bats weren't killed but got shooed out through the cabin doors and windows. Meanwhile, the vast majority never flapped down from the attic into living spaces.

Health officials thus deemed it better safe than sorry to alert everybody who has stayed in the cabins recently that they might have been exposed by being bitten or scratched. Especially when people are sleeping, a bat bite or scratch can go unseen and unnoticed.

I’m not sure how all these stories are coming to light. Maybe all this weird 💩 has been going on for ever. :eek

More frozen shrimp recalled for possible radioactive contamination.

The products have the potential to be contaminated with Cesium-137, a radioactive isotope that is a byproduct of nuclear reactions. :hungover

Sold in at least 9 states. Seems that Walmart was one of the main retailers.

Back in the late 70's my grandmother (1900 dob) blamed everything on "it's all those rockets they're sending into the air". Maybe she was on to something?

Maybe. I’ve been wondering when they would be putting exhaust scrubbers of catalytic converters on “them there rockets”! :brad

Apparently the shrimp in question was “farmed” in Indonesia. 🦐

I've not followed the radioactive shrimp, but ever since Fukushima, there was the concern of how long until seafood was contaminated by the release into the ocean.

In my childhood the risks of Strontium 90 in milk became a hot topic for a few years. It is a radioactive isotope from nuclear fission and was in the atmosphere from both the weapons used in Japan and the later above ground nuclear testing. But with a half life of just a bit under 30 years the discussions of its risks have for the most part disappeared.
